Avoid Sales Tax

I’m a resident in Oregon, and found a CPO car in California. I’m being told by the dealership in California at Fremont, that I am going to be forced to pay California sales tax. Is there anyway to avoid this tax?

That’s the crappy part about being out of state and buying in CA. When we bought our RV they actually met us at the border in order to avoid paying CA tax. The other way is have it delivered, surely be cheaper than paying tax and save you time.

I asked about delivery to Portland and they told me it’s not possible. It MUST be picked up in Cali.

It's really weird that they won't ship it.

People have gotten CPO's shipped to them. Maybe it's some recent policy change now that there are so many CPO's.

CPO has recently changed its policy that car has to be picked up in person and shipped by the purchaser.

I could be wrong, but I thought you paid sales tax where you registered the car, not where you bought it.

There is no way around the tax. California sucks when it comes to squeezing money out of everyone. Even non-residents.

You should be able to have Tesla ship or arrange shipping on your own. Sounds like your advisor is being lazy.

In short, you pay CA their 10%, they'll give OR whatever portion they require, CA puts the rest in their pockets.

That is not necessarily true. Your home state needs to have that reciprocity agreement with CA.

You could end up paying full tax in both states.
