I put the rear view screen up top, and the map (or music) on the bottom. That's the way I ran it before 8.0, so it's what I'm used to. Also it means the icons don't disappear.
I do the same - camera on top and nav on the bottom - and I don't want the icon & status bars disappearing either. I'm still getting used to the confusing UI change for launching apps, though. When I first installed 8.0, I'd hit an app icon and think it didn't work because the app went to the bottom. Now to switch to another app in the top, you have to press and hold the icon. Switching back to camera can be a tap or press and hold. If you accidentally tap an app and it goes to the bottom, tap or press and hold don't put Nav back on the bottom, you have to press, hold and drag down to get it back there. So complicated and I'm still often "fixing" what it did. It was fine how it was before...
