Delivery in TX and register in NJ

Hi, I have received the invite to configure my model 3 but wanted to confirm few things before I place the order. I currently reside in TX but have NJ license. Can I have the car delivered in Texas but register in NJ? If doable, Do I need to do anything or Tesla will handle all the paperwork for it? Really appreciate if you can shed some light on it. Thanks.

its a weird question. Your delivery specialist would be the one who could say for sure. I think Tesla usually registers where you state of residence is. I imagined that if your state of residence was in New Jersey and you were temporarily in Texas, Tesla would be able to coordinate registering in New Jersey and arranging the delivery in Texas.

Its weird because you say you "reside" in Texas. Are you active duty military in Texas? From my own experience being prior military in Texas and otherwise the rule is something like 3 months to change your license over. Hope that helps.

In Texas, Tesla hands you a temporary California tag, a manufacturer’s statement of origin and sometimes an inspection report. You have to take the statement of origin and inspection report to the county tax office and pay the sales tax and registration. Then you get your license plates and later title is mailed to you. I think you need a Texas driver’s license to title and register the car.

You need to talk to Tesla to figure out what they can do.

While your description matches the process for my two Model S deliveries, the recent delivery of my Model 3 was very different than you describe. Tesla handled everything the Model 3, including providing temporary Texas tags, not CA tags.
