Does solar make sense in Texas?

Solar is viewed as a desirable home feature in some areas now (like CA). In those areas where there are few homes with solar, there likely will be some resistance for prospective buyers who don't understand the technology.

But that likely will change.

So what we did - asking our realtor about re-sale right now, probably didn't provide us any useful information.

If planning a system now - and you assume you'll keep the home for at least 5 years - it's likely there will be many more homes with solar by then - so prospective homebuyers would likely find a home with solar more attractive.

Does that mean you can add the cost of the solar panels and PowerWalls to the value of the home? Probably not, solar panels and PowerWalls are technology that will degrade over time. Plus newer solar panels and energy storage will likely be at a lower cost per KWh.

What we estimated was the equivalent of a natural gas generator. Though that is probably too conservative. A more reasonable estimate might be to assume you'll recoup 50% of the solar/PW cost (after the tax credit) when reselling the house.

So that should help accelerate the "break even" point for recouping the costs of the solar panels and PWs...
