The same situation always existed with New Jersey compared to their neighboring states. I don't know if that's the case anymore, but it was a couple of decades ago.

Back in November the gas tax was raised 23 cents to 37.5 cents per gallon (first increase since 1988).

NJ went from 2nd lowest in the country, to the 6th highest

Growing up in S. Jersey we were told that the gas was so cheap because most of the tankers were offloaded at the Jersey ports, so transportation costs were lower in NJ. Now I don't know if that was true at the time, or even if it still applies since a lot of our oil is now domestic and not coming through the ports.

Or was it just the really low gas tax?
