Hmmmm - in yate, the tag editor I use for flac files, there's a ratings field that I never use. You get a choice of 0-5 stars in it. i wonder if setting a track to 5 stars will make it a "favorite"? More investigation may ensue...

It stores the fav info in another file(s) in the music directory.
It stores the fav info in its own persistent memory, not on the USB drive.
It stores the fav info in working RAM and loses it on reboot.
I'll bet on (2) or (3).
You can test these hypotheses, and find the data if it's on the USB drive.
E.g. snapshot the USB music directory to a computer, then put the drive in the car and mark one favorite, take the drive back to the computer, and run a directory comparison or look for files with newer timestamps. IIRC `diff -r DIR1 DIR2` will compare two directories from the Mac or Linux command line.
