Tesla do need to find a way of making battery repairs cheaper for out of warranty cars. Sounds like they can’t be bothered to even swap out a bad cell or module in a otherwise good battery.

Maybe something for third party aftermarket battery repair places like Gruber.

But I read this last week as ‘Rich man destroys car as dramatic show of wealth!’

Surprising different impressions . I thought it was out of warranty i.e 8 yrs plus - and was pre first refresh with the plastic nose. That means it's 'value' would have been circa £35-40K with a good battery. New battery for £20K. So some chap wanting youtube clicks threw £15K away for his moment of fame.

It's not possible to swap individual cells as they are glued together, modules are only in 3 units AFAIK

Respectfully, I’m not sure this is true. All Tesla batteries can be replaced individually or in modules. They’re just parts of a machine.

Yes it’s difficult and requires specialist tools knowledge etc, but it can be done and would be cheaper than a whole battery replacement. Tesla just choose not to offer this service.

Have a look at this video from Gruber in the USA who can undertake battery cell and module replacement in any Tesla. Looks like they mostly do out of warranty work. :
