There have been some articles about Ambri (Batteries for clean energy: Ambri) lately. The batteries are made from commonly available materials and are not subject to thermal runaway. They are heavy and can't be used while in motion but would be useful for stationary batteries.

As a side comment, considering how long it is taking to bring this to market there are probably many new ideas that fade away because someone didn't have the money or time to keep working on them.
