Model S Family Trip SoCal to Carlsbad Caverns, NM

A couple weeks ago we took a family trip from our home in SoCal to Zion National Park in Utah. The 2018 Model S 100D made it so nice! Quiet comfortable ride, autopilot, and stops in Las Vegas and St. George to supercharge. It was such a good trip, we decided to embark on another trip, before the kids start school. So this week we are planning to head to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. I thought it would be like the first trip, a bunch of superchargers along the way in interesting and convenient places.

Nope.

It seems that there are no superchargers near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The hotel we are staying at (Hampton Inn & Suites) did say that they would let us park near the front door and charge off the hotel 110 outlets. But staying there for just one night before leaving for the caves the next morning won't put on very much range, especially if we crawl into Carlsbad low on battery.

So the new plan is to drive from SoCal to Las Cruces on the first day. There is a supercharger in Deming, just before getting to Las Cruces. The next day we would head down to El Paso, TX, charging there and at the supercharger in Van Horn, TX. It takes us really far away from Carlsbad, NM but it seems the only way to get to a supercharger. If we fill up full in Van Horn (about 315 miles of range), we should be able to get into Carlsbad, NM and back out to the same supercharger on one charge, plus maybe 40-50 miles of extra buffer from charging on the hotel's 110V outlets. It's about 250 miles round trip from Van Horn, into Carlsbad, and back, according to the map.

From there we would stop in El Paso for today, and one more stop in Phoenix for a night before we get home to SoCal. A long road trip, with the excitement of range anxiety.

Has anyone ever made this trip and managed the supercharging or knows of any interesting places to hit in Las Cruces, El Paso, or Carlsbad? Thanks in advance.

So I recommend you look at Plugshare.com there are some options that could work- You could use the Peco's supercharger, The most convenient one is probably staying at the Hilton property in Pecos TX. it's a Home2Suites I think, and has some Destination chargers, There are several RV parks near Carlsbad Caverns that seem to allow use of their 14-50 RV outlets for varying amounts of money. Good luck and please post back about your trip, good or bad
