Model X - Bike Trunk Rack

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, at the time of the purchase of my 2017 Model X, I did not opt for a tow package. Also double checked under the car, popped open the compartment and it does not have any towing component. Would like to install a bike rack for our bikes (2 kids, 2 adults). I can fit the 2 kids inside the X but the 2 adults would not fit.

Doing some research, I found that there are trunk rack products out there that you attach to the trunk itself instead of a tow hitch.

Looking to see if anyone had any experience with such products? If so how were your experiences and which product did you use?

Thanks!

I would not recommend a trunk/rear mounted hitch. They put pressure on the trunk and care will need to be taken to prevent scratches on the car.

check out after market hitches by torklift. Torklift Central | Select Your EcoHitch Style

I currently have a 2020 model x with a hitch, but before I had a model s. I bought the eco hitch for $375 and installed it myself. took about 2-3hrs. works great. link above is for a 2018 model x. torklift also gives you a list of installers. but I just went ahead and installed mine on my own. I added pics of install and final hitch.

Also for my bike rack, since I had 4 bikes (2 adults and 2 kids), I upgraded from kuat to hollywood 4-bike rack. it works great. Only downside its a little more involved to get the bikes on there and secured.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I guess I should update this thread with what I did.
I did not end up with a trunk rack. I too was a bit concerned about the pressure that would be on my trunk and potential scratches.

Instead I tried to contact my local Tesla Service center to see if its possible to get a retro fit.
To my surprise, they said they were able to do it. I was under the impression they no longer offered this retrofit.

Dropped my car off and they installed the re-bar. I was given the tow hitch to connect to the re-bar. The cost was $594.75 (CAD) plus taxes labor included.

Bought the Swagman trailhead 4 Folding Hitch Mount Bike Rack and its been working great for us all summer.
