Pedestrian Warning Sound

I almost hate to ask, as it tends to spur controversy.

Tesla recently added a pedestrian warning sound to all new production. This makes a noise to warn pedestrians of an approaching vehicle that otherwise would be silent.

The downside - no more whisper quiet when stopped.

It's apparently easy to disable it on the Model 3 (there are videos), as it is on other EVs (the Bolt required removing a single fuse).

What will you do when you get your Model 3?

Depends on how obnoxious it is. If anyone can make it not obnoxious, Tesla can. So I have my hopes that it won't irritate me.

I took home a loaner p3d the other day..it had the speaker, I didnt mind it. Even in my garage it was barely noticeable, in reverse it sounds sorta cool..in forward you cant even hear it

The Bolt decision was easy. It sounded a bit like fingernails across a blackboard.

What do you mean ‘make it not obnoxious’? I thought the sounds were prescribed. Need to find the regulations again. All new EVs will have it next September so should be interesting.

As I’ve said before, I think it’s overkill especially having the sound on at rest and on the highway. Going to ‘sound’ great in a traffic jam.

Reverse sound doesn't bother me. In fact I like it that it makes a sound as I pull off my driveway and warns anyone walking along the sidewalk as the camera view is partially blocked by surrounding bushes. After all the reverse is only, what, like 5 seconds? The forward sound is hardly audible from the inside.

Half the cars manufactured started 9/1/2019 have to have them them all on 9/1/2020 is what I understand. Going to read the text to see on the sound requirements. Elon had some comments on this about changing sounds but I think it was for the horn.

I would be afraid of liability if you hit a pedestrian and they find out that you disabled the horn.

I heard a Model 3 in a parking lot recently with the noise maker. If any of that noise permeates the cabin, no thank you!

I don't hear the sound in forward, but I definitely hear it in reverse. It's not that bad; I've heard worse. In my opinion, Tesla did an okay job making it tolerable even if you like silence.

Yes, that is more nuanced than my reply. I like having the reverse sound.

its barely noticed unless you are in a garage with your windows down


if you "disable" it and get into an accident with a pedestrian you are screwed
