PPF, consistent weekly washing, midwest rust prevention methods

If you are consistently washing your car by hand, with the ONR method or similar, is something like PPF really necessary?
Also, this winter you might experience one day in the 10 degrees zone but next day its 40 degrees. Good time to get a car wash. If taking it to a coin-op self wash, what is your technique for doing this? Can using the pressure wash nozzle underneath the car hurt anything? What areas are you focusing the nozzle on? I hear going to one of these washes if your car is filthy is a good first step, then do the ONR method after.

Also, before winter really hits, are you taking your car to a detailer to have it waxed and sealed?

PPF guards against scratches and chips, which washing does nothing for.

Washing underneath the car definitely won't hurt anymore than driving in the rain, but the entire undercarriage is covered in a plastic or composite that won't corrode. Just do the usual wheel well spray and you're good. I use an underbody wand with my power washer at home for normal cars, but in the winter I try to regularly visit a touchless wash for a basic shampoo + rinse and underbody wash.

I'd do a nice ceramic coat or sealant instead of wax, detailing tech has come a long way since carnauba. A professional, semi-permanent multi-layer coating can last years and washing becomes super quick, just soap, rinse, and dry with microfiber.
