Apologies if this has already been covered. The issue that prompts this post/thread: Do Models Y and X share tow/trailer hitch-assembly components?
No. Model Y and Model X (in North America) do not share major tow hitch components.
As most of us know, Model Y can optionally be outfitted with a factory trailer/tow hitch assembly. The online Tesla North America Parts Catalog lists the following:
In addition, the Parts Catalog lists:
Fortunately, the Tesla Shop accessory website lists a Model Y Tow Package (probably the same as the "Tow Hitch Assembly"), for sale for $1,300 (US). Included in the "package" is:
Notably absent is anything that attaches into the 2-inch receiver, which is permanently welded to the "steel tow bar" and stowed out-of-sight under the "tow hitch cover," inside the rear bumper cover.
Next, let's review the somewhat different Model X situation. The online Model X Parts Catalog provides a handy line-drawing and therein illustrates and lists "trailer hitch" parts. Individual component trailer hitch parts include ("NA" = North America):
I believe that all North American Model X come from the factory with the full tow package included in the purchase price. The Catalog does not appear to list a comprehensive trailer hitch assembly, and the Tesla Shop website does not offer an optional trailer hitch or tow package for sale.
Other, small parts include:
Some questions about Model Y and Model X tow/trailer hitch components.
Conclusion: Model Y and Model X do not share major tow hitch components.
Short Answer
No. Model Y and Model X (in North America) do not share major tow hitch components.
Long Answer
As most of us know, Model Y can optionally be outfitted with a factory trailer/tow hitch assembly. The online Tesla North America Parts Catalog lists the following:
Illustration ID Number | Part Name | Part Number |
---|---|---|
- no illustration provided - | Tow Hitch Assembly | 1514757-00-F |
In addition, the Parts Catalog lists:
- six attachment nuts - Part # 1454548-00-A,
- (optional) trailer-brake wire-bundle harness - Part # 1072586-00-A, and
- plastic tow hitch cover - Part #s 1494009-00-A or 1494009-00-B.
Fortunately, the Tesla Shop accessory website lists a Model Y Tow Package (probably the same as the "Tow Hitch Assembly"), for sale for $1,300 (US). Included in the "package" is:
- "steel tow bar,"
- "2-inch hitch receiver,"
- "7-pin standard connector,"
- (internal) "trailer harness," and
- "tow mode software."
Illustration (above) ID Number | Part Name | Part Number |
---|---|---|
1 | Trailer Hitch - NA (frame-attachment bar) | 1027581-00-G or 1027581-00-H |
4 | Trailer Hitch Adapter - NA (heavy, L-shaped, removable 2" receiver) | 1027582-00-B |
5 | Trailer Hitch Adapter Storage Bag - NA | 1482424-00-A |
I believe that all North American Model X come from the factory with the full tow package included in the purchase price. The Catalog does not appear to list a comprehensive trailer hitch assembly, and the Tesla Shop website does not offer an optional trailer hitch or tow package for sale.
Other, small parts include:
- eight attachment nuts (Illustration ID Number 3) - Part # 1047337-00-A (So a little stronger attachment than Model Y?)
- (optional) trailer-brake wire-bundle harness (Illustration ID Number 6) - Part # 1072586-00-A (Same as for Model Y.)
- tow hitch cover (not illustrated) - Part # 1058357-99-B and 1058357-00-D (The Model X tow hitch bumper cover/door is oriented downward, not backwards like the Model Y cover.)
Some questions about Model Y and Model X tow/trailer hitch components.
- Do Model Y and Model X share the same attachment/hitch component (i.e., the bar inside the bumper that attaches to the car)?
----------------------------Model X----------------------------////-------------------------------Model Y-------------------------------
"No." The Model Y Tow Hitch bar is attached to car with six fasteners. The Model X Trailer Hitch bar uses eight fasteners.
Also, the Model Y bar has a 2-inch receiver welded to it. The receiver opening is aimed directly out (backward on the car). The Model X bar has a greased cylindrical socket hole intended to receive a removable 2-inch receiver adapter piece. When the bar is installed on the car, this greased socket is aimed down.
- Do Model X and Model Y share the "trailer hitch adapter"--i.e., the removable, heavy, L-shaped 2" receiver part that is provided with new Model X in its own cushioned, nylon, zippered bag?
Contrary to numerous eBay sale descriptions, erroneous posts on the Internet, and even verbal confirmation (as recently as July 29, 2022) by Tesla (parts desk) staff, NO. Model Y does not and cannot use the Model X Trailer Hitch Adapter
The (optional) 2-inch receiver on a Model Y is permanently attached to the car. In Model X, the 2-inch receiver is part of a removable "adapter" that locks to and unlocks from the car.
- Why does Part Number 1514757-00-D (Model Y Tow Hitch Bar), apparently a legitimate Model Y part, not appear in the Tesla online Parts Catalog?
Unknown.
Conclusion: Model Y and Model X do not share major tow hitch components.
