South Korean tech publication THEELEC has reported that LG Chem has ramped up production of battery cells to support Tesla’s new plant in China.
Additionally, the outlet said that Tesla will use NCM 811 cells containing a nickel proportion of 80% or more. The cells have previously been used for electric buses, but will be used for the first time to power a car when installed in the Model 3. Tesla has previously used Panasonic cells.
The report said that Tesla has asked LG Chem to expand its battery lines and the battery-maker has doubled the production volume from its Nanjing plant over this time last year.
Tesla is aiming for an initial production rate of 250,000 cars a year from Gigafactory 3.
News circulated last month that Tesla contracted LG to supply batteries for vehicles built at the Shanghai plant.
Gigafactory 3 will produce Model 3 and Model Y cars, including battery modules and packs. The factory is expected to start operations by the end of the year.
