Which films have self driving vehicles you summon up? I thought it would be fun to make a list, see how the concept was presented over the decades, and how it might relate to reality.

The original Total Recall had self driving cars.

Irobot has a great scene where will smith disables the AP in his audi and the female costar freaks out, saying something like you're going drive it yourself?

Saw a Tesla deliver in Person of Interest - series final. Passenger in back, no one else in car.

    The Fifth Element.

I think in the 'Gridlock' episode of Dr. Who where they're trapped for generations in a traffic jam.

Here are a few that we missed! BATMAN!
Self-driving cars in sci-fi films have been way off - Autofocus.ca

Also, are we talking "real" self driving cars (via technology) or possessed cars, like Herbie or Christine?

    Real ones. :)

I wonder when they first appeared on film and how they evolved over the years.

Another one is obscure and no one else here will have seen it - 'Cold Lazarus', a Dennis Potter TV series.

'I, Robot' can't have been a remake of Total Recall, can it? I don't remember anything about 'Total Recall', ironically, But 'I, Robot' was an adaptation of Asimov's story while 'Total Recall' was based on a Philip K Dick story.

I think he meant "I, Robot" and the remake of Total Recall (which was called "Total Recall").

Yes you are right, did not catch the missing "and". I didn't include the original total recall because the " Johnny cabs" had a robot cabby driving them. Just a mater of semantics I guess. Based on that you could say the transport driven by Robbie the robot also qualifies in "forbidden planet"

Can you imagine lighting up a cigar with three passengers in todays world? Gosh, it really makes me want to rent my Tesla out to Uber, and be a member of a forced computer pool. (snark)

OMG, that was wonderful! You win! You win the internet!

Wonder if the people at Tesla have seen this.
