Place a finger on one of the app icons in the row near the top of the center display. If you hold your finger on an icon for half a second two little squares will appear just below your finger. Drag your finger into one of the squares and take your finger off the screen to see what happens. In a few seconds of playing around you will understand how this part of the interface works.
I thought new owners were always shown this during their orientation to the car at delivery. If you were not shown this, your DS really screwed up.

You can also hold your finger on the icon and drag it to the place on the screen you want (top or bottom half) instead of using the little square. I usually use the little square, but for some people it might actually be easier to drag all the way down the screen to where they want it.
