Supercharger - Susanville, CA (LIVE 29 Sep 2021, 8 V3 stalls)

I am surprised to see there is no thread for the upcoming Susanville Supercharger. This stop is vital for getting from Reno to Redding or Mt. Shasta, and therefore any point north on I-5 in Oregon or Washington. Anyone in Susanville who can look up permits etc... Tesla lists it as opening in 2019, but last year they listed it as opening in 2018... With the Gigafactory near Reno I though this one would be open by now.

There are no threads for many "coming soon" superchargers because many are just a figment of someone's imagination. Tesla's coming soon map has always been more aspirational than informational. Here in Texas we're still waiting for Wichita Falls which I think has been coming soon since 2015, and Ft. Stockton just opened which probably has been coming soon since 2014.

If you find a building permit or any sign of construction in Susanville, or even hear a good rumor for location, please start a thread on it.

Thanks Guys. Hopefully this one won't take that long since we need it to go north out of Reno. Glad yours are open.
Well there are other ways to go north out of Reno, but I agree, it would be nice to get this one installed.

In the meantime, there is a HPWC at the Red Lion. There might even be 2, look on plugshare. I used it once and ate at the pizza restaurant in the same parking lot. Gave me enough buffer in an hour or so to feel comfortable to go to Mount Shasta (Klamath Falls didn't have a supercharger at the time so that route wasn't an option). There is also a grocery store, Starbucks and many other fast food options across the street.

nothing.. nada.. zilch ... no submital as of yet per City of Susanville or conversations with the agency. Not to say Tesla has not spoke with Walmar, Safeway or another retailer. So, it would seem getting it completed by 2019 could be tough from what we've learned from the past sites between permitting and construction.
That being said, we really have no idea. Tesla could have everything ready to go (plans, site agreement, utility coordination), submit an app and go construct it (like the Yuba City Site).
Begs the question on its location. Susanville is kind of split up between HWY 139 and 395 off HWY 36, so anybody's guess on its location? Seems like near the intersection of HWY 139 and HWY 36 could make sense, most likely in the Walmart/Safeway Parking lot near the Pizza Factory?. We visit there on a occasion but usually just to the downtown brewery for lunch. Speaking of locations.. The Lassen Ale Works Boardroom is as good a site as any :)..but highly unlikely.

Thanks for the help guys. Fingers Crossed! Yuba City or Chico will definitely help by allowing the Red Bluff down 99 to Chico, down to 20 up to Truckee and into Reno route, but that takes about an hour longer than 44 from Redding and 2 hours longer than Mt Shasta to 44 to 395 to Reno.

Tesla also shows that they plan Superchargers for Adin, Newell, and Greenville (of all places.) (These spots boggle my mind, but that is another thread.)

Anyway, Tesla sometimes puts in Superchargers along highways in clusters. Probably saves some money on construction costs. Susanville may be one of those locations that will be built when Tesla has lined up one or more of those other putative sites.

And, don't forget the Red Lion Hotel as a potential spot. It already has two destination chargers. I understand that the owner of the Red Lion (and the Hotel Niles in Alturas) drives a Tesla. He might be the go-to person to get Superchargers installed on his property. That spot is sorta close to the junction of US395 and SR36, and it is likely that more travelers would be driving on SR139 or SR36/44 that heading north to Alturas until Tesla builds out 395 to Lakeview and beyond.

I guess it depends where you exactly you are going, but I've driven Seattle to Reno and Seattle to Vegas (often via Reno) more times than I can count, and it's an interesting drive because there are so many different options. I often end up taking the slow route in the winter months, sticking to the interstates to avoid snow and ice as best as possible. Those roads between Susanville and Mount Shasta can be treacherous in the winter, and the same can be said for just about any route crossing the Oregon Cascades.

I too lol'd at Adin, Newell and Greenville. It honestly gave me little confidence that whoever was adding pins on the map had any local knowledge whatsoever. The more superchargers the merrier of course, but honestly if I were Tesla and I had a willing host business in Susanville and Alturas as you say, I would probably just put superchargers there and call it good, at least for the next 5 years or so. Of course if there are 10 million Teslas on the road 5-10 years from now then every little town will need a supercharger, but no need to build those now.

Lastly, if they did build Susanville and Alturas, I would "complete" 395 through Oregon by putting superchargers in Lakeview, Burns and John Day.

Diamond Mountain Casino & Hotel is outside town, and may be short on parking, but maybe?
It's kind of a dump, but sure it would work. One nice thing about casinos is they always have 24 hour restrooms and food. Although I suspect the food offerings here in the middle of the night would be pretty weak. Also when the casino has a hotel, the hotel lobby is a good option if you want to hang out some place and avoid the smoke.

My understanding from conversations I've had is they use heat maps of "low state of charge" and crowd sourcinging to plot locations that are needed. But hey.. nobody goes over a bridge that's not built so kudos to Tesla for filling out the network to go "anyware".

So it sounds like the best thing to do is go through Susanville and spend a few hours at the destination charger. Makes as much sense as driving an extra 2 hours around the long way I guess. Thanks for the help everyone!
It may not take that long if you can drive slowly and use other hypermiling techniques to conserve battery. You never said what kind of Tesla you are driving. That would most likely be the deciding factor. Also please provide your exact Point A and Point B and we can help you figure out what the best route is.

Thanks PLUS!

I am driving a 2015 Model S 70D. I can leave the Reno supercharger at the Atlantis full I guess. I would need to make it to the destination charger at the Best Western Hilltop Inn in Redding.

Reno to Susanville is about 90 miles. Susanville to Redding is about 115 miles or so. I would think that a range charge in Reno would warrant about 1:15 to 1:30 of charging at Susanville with your onboard 40A charger. That would add about 40 miles of range. (Of course your range may vary widely depending upon weather and road conditions.)

It is all downhill to Redding west of Old Station, so your efficiency will improve once you reach that spot. Like has been said countless times before, it is better to start off slower than usual to conserve battery. I would guess that the two-lane portion of 395 north of Hallelujah Jct. will not be heavily traveled this time of year, so keeping your speed at 3-4 MPH below the limit might give you a modest cushion and reduce charging time in Susanville.

You probably don't even need to stop and charge along the way due to the elevation drop *if* you drive slowly. The other direction is a different story entirely. But yes, making a lunch stop at the Red Lion in Susanville for a little while would give you a better buffer. And you probably don't want to arrive in Redding near empty just in case the destination charger is occupied and you have to scramble for another charging option in a city without a supercharger.

If you do this trip in the other direction, you will need to plan a long stop in Susanville or you may even want to just consider taking the slow route through and use the new supercharger in Yuba City.

RE: elevation change

Like cpa mentioned, it's relatively flat from Reno through Susanville to Old Station, but then from Old Station to Redding you drop from >4k ft to <1k ft so don't panic if you are getting low at Old Station. You will be fine even if you only have like 30 Rated Miles there with 48 miles to go, because you will gain so much in regenerative braking with the elevation drop. If you did some hardcore hypermiling, you could almost make it from Old Station to Redding without using any of the battery.

That is an idea. Head west off Interstate 80 at SR 20 (about 25 miles or so west of Donner Pass.) SR20 will take you to Nevada City, Grass Valley, and then down to Marysville, just across the Feather River from Yuba City. It is all downhill from Donner Pass, so a decent charge in Truckee should see you through to Yuba City. Might be faster in the long run as well.

The only caution is that SR20 is occasionally closed during this time of year due to spin-outs and white-out conditions. I believe it has been closed about five times so far this season. Always check road conditions!
