Right now, it's cheaper to use the same interior trim panels as the premium, and those may have the speakers prefitted. It essentially just saves them an assembly line, although it's a bit odd they bothered to design a gimped wiring harness.

In the future (maybe once the federal tax credit fully expires?) they could easily offer an SR+ Premium by installing the premium audio harness, subwoofer, and amp in the factory.

This actually makes sense. I didn’t think of them being pre-fitted to the panels. However, I do remember Musk saying wires were one of the hard parts to automate and that it was basically fully back to humans on running and connecting them. So... could be one panel with the speak already seated into it from a different area not directly on the line, then place those into the car but save time but not having a human run cables up to them and connect them...
