The idea of an electric car goes back more than 100 years and has many "inventors".
I do think we need to give Elon credit for building the first successful EV company (after surviving near death) leading to mass adoption of EVs. Without Elon, all we would have would be the pathetic compliance cars produced by the ICE manufacturers.
What Musk did was fund and structure the control of an EV company so the auto and fossil fuel owners couldn't buy it up, control, and squash it. That buy up, control, and force out the founders so it could be squashed was a means that had been used again and again to keep promising alternative energy companies and EV companies from succeeding. The fossil fuel industry makes $billions a day. Spending a few hundred million buying control, and squashing alternatives is cheap compared to their daily profits.
