Tesla has hired a new general counsel – Dane Butswinkas, the Chairman of Williams & Connolly.
Tesla announced the appointment in a blog post.

Butswinkas, a veteran trial lawyer, will be replacing Todd Maron, who has led Tesla’s legal department for the past five years. “This completes a transition plan that Todd and Tesla have worked on since July 2018, with Todd remaining at Tesla until January to continue to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities to Dane,” the company said.
Butswinkas comes to Tesla after serving for nearly 30 years at Williams & Connolly, where he was Co-Chair of the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Financial Services and Banking Groups. He will report directly to Chief Executive Elon Musk and oversee Tesla’s legal and government relations teams.
“After 30 years as a trial lawyer at Williams & Connolly, I would have never imagined joining a company in-house,” Butswinkas said in a release. “But Tesla presents a unique and inspiring opportunity. Tesla’s mission is bigger than Tesla – one that is critical to the future of our planet. It’s hard to identify a mission more timely, more essential, or more worth fighting for.”
