Do the Michelins that come with the sport wheel have this chunky rim guard?

That could be related to size of tire compared to size of wheel. I think the tires Tesla uses tend to be a bit narrow compared to wheel size, possibly due to rolling resistance / energy efficiency compromises they decided to make.
Wider versions of the same tire would hang off the edge of the wheel more.

Yes, the wheels are a bit wide for the tires, 245 seems to be the ideal width for 8.5” wheels.

Oddly, looking at the specs on TireRack, the Tesla version has 0.2” wider tread at the same 235 width.
