Tesla Version of Michelin 4s different from the others?

That could be related to size of tire compared to size of wheel. I think the tires Tesla uses tend to be a bit narrow compared to wheel size, possibly due to rolling resistance / energy efficiency compromises they decided to make.
Wider versions of the same tire would hang off the edge of the wheel more.

The Michelin's that come on a Tesla only come in a 20" version. That lip does not present enough room on the sidewall for the 20" version.

2nd'ly Tesla's 20" version comes with foam on the inside of the tire ( specially designed for Tesla ).

Michelin Pilot Sports are nowhere near the same kind of tire as the MXM4s. You are talking about a max performance summer tire vs an all season tire. The Pilot Sports will have more grip on dry and wet surfaces, and the MXM4s will last a lot longer and fare better in snow.

@Mal and @TEG you guys might be right about the tire fitment. I just looked at a pic of mine from a distance and couldn't see the lip at all, but looking at your pics it seems it is there but as you say, a tighter fitment.

Not really, the suggested wheel width for a 235 PS4S is 8" to 9.5". Also all model 3's have the same wheel width and tire width and they're fairly un-aggressive in my opinion.

Yes, the wheels are a bit wide for the tires, 245 seems to be the ideal width for 8.5” wheels.

Oddly, looking at the specs on TireRack, the Tesla version has 0.2” wider tread at the same 235 width.

Looks like it. Even so, the lip looks much smaller than on the Porsche. Odd, especially since the Porsche tread is said to be narrower.
