@Dangerous Fish Yup! Originally not, they had minimal coverings to best support fast battery swap. As battery swaps got deprioritized and impact safety concerns grew, Tesla started fitting titanium HVB protection plates from the factory on new Model S, and they offered to retrofit them onto older Model S for free, at owner request. We took them up on the retrofit for ours.
As I recall, the impact on battery swap time was said to be only a few minutes anyways. And the whole battery swap thing never panned out for these cars. I'm still waiting for the invite to use that one swap station in California.
I've no idea what new Model S come with for battery protection these days. Parts catalog would probably make it clear.
