Before getting my MS, I had two VWs and used a software/hardware combination from a company called Ross_Tech that allowed owners to make small changes to various modules in the car via the OBDII port. For example, if you wanted to change the delay time for lights on after leaving the vehicle, you could change it to any value by modifying the byte/bit value. Likewise, if you added something to the car like a backup camera, you could go in and tell the specific module that you now had one and it would display it on the radio screen.
