Two First Generation RAV4-EVs for sale (2001 and 2002)

I've got way too many electric cars, and a Model X on order, and
need to make some room in the garage. As such, I'm selling my and my
wife's first-generation RAV4-EVs, and I have many extras that are
available with them. They are available immediately and are located
in the Santa Cruz, California area. I would assist in delivery either
to you or to a professional shipper anywhere in the San Francisco Bay
area and as far south as Salinas or Monterey.

Pictures to follow when I get a chance to wash the car first. :)

Both cars have always been garaged and never smoked in. They have
all five floor mats (4 seats and rear cargo area) which have always
been used and have protected the underlying carpet well.

Both cars have rear bumper-hitches installed.

Both cars come with one TAL charger with a wall bracket.

Both cars have had the charge-port capacitor replaced with the upgraded unit.

Both cars have lived their entire life in the Santa Cruz area and
have not had their batteries subjected to more extreme temperature
climates. Last we tested them (August 2012), no impedances were over
8. Throughout their life they have been routinely "timer charged" to
stop the charge near the top of the green in order to prevent high
temperatures. Equalization cycles done occasionally and always before
a long drive to prevent them from sitting at high SOC. I recently
sold my third RAV4-EV at 120,000 miles with batteries still going
strong. I will post more recent battery numbers as soon as I can
obtain them.

Both cars have Bridgestone Ecopia EP-02 tires.

Neither car has ever been in an accident or had any body work.
Both have minor scratches/dings as would be expected for their age.
The interiors of both cars are very clean with the exception of the
cargo area of the 2002 car, which is somewhat scraped up having been
used, for, well, cargo.

I also have the following extras, but am reserving them for
purchase priority by whomever buys these cars. Prices to be
negotiated, but a check for $30,000 gets you both cars *and* all of
the extras.

Set of Toyota OEM front brake pads (new).
Four new tires (Bridgestone Ecopia EP-02).
One pair of Toyota OEM roof racks (used).
Spare rear bumper-hitch (new).
Spare windshield and trim required for installation (heated windshield, NIB)
Spare TAL charger (no wall mount bracket included with this third charger).

If only the original RAV 4 EV could be charged on J1772, I might take you up on that.

I've done it. If you put the TAL charger upside-down behind the front passenger seat, the inductive paddle can reach the charge port through the front passenger window without removing the charger. That, and a J1772-to-NEMA 14-50 adapter is all you need.

I know of at least one person working on engineering a 'native' J1772 solution. It involves adding a third-party charger and a J1772 port in the front, and interfaces into the car's computer systems to support automatic tapering and stopping of the charge. No ETA.

Some updated information on these cars:

Pictures for the 2002 car are now available at:

2002 RAV4-EV for Sale

Battery impedances for the 2001 car are all 7mOhms.
Battery impedances for the 2002 car are 10 @ 7mOhms and 14 @ 6mOhms.

(Photos of the tester are now included in the photo albums.)

I *do* have a wall mount bracket for the third TAL charger.

I also have a set of four Toyota OEM floor mats new in box. These mats are the correct part # for a 1997 gas RAV4, so they don't provide complete coverage where the transmission's intrusion into the floor area would be. Other than that, they fit real good.

Rolo, I tried J1772 charging with my RAV4 when I had it. Unfortunately I sold the stuff when I sold my RAV4, but I am happy tell you where I got it and how it worked: just fine; my TAL had a 14-50 plug, the car pulls 27A and the J1772 stations provide 30A continuous - they are on 40A breakers. Stuffing the TAL in the car, rolling down the window and managing the adapters and cords is kind of fun once in good weather; fortunately we almost always just charged the RAV4 at home. I think the 14-50 adapter was about $200. Picking up Adelman's spare TAL might make this a little easier (always good to have a spare one of those anyway!). If you are going to charge away from home often, the native J1772 solution sounds perfect, although it has been a long time coming.

Those impedance numbers look really nice. And there sure aren't many left with only 41k miles.

Just some info from another site, about a 2003 RAV4EV:

Hi All,

I am going to “give" my RAV4 EV away. Details below. I would prefer that it goes to another RAV4 EV owner or enthusiast (i.e. one of you) to either refurbish or use for parts. Anything to keep it out of the crusher. I’m asking $250 OBO.

If this all sounds familiar it’s because I tried to put it on eBay earlier this year, which was a spectacular failure (several bidders up to a ridiculous $4900, then no-show on the buyer. I suspect someone just gamed the system because, well… y’know).

I will hopefully restore my trust in humanity (or at least the wonderful people on this list) if it goes to a good home.

Updated info below. If you’re interested, please contact me off-list.

Thanks,
—Kevin
