Unplugged Moderate Performance Model Y Makes Noises

Anyone experiencing pinging noises from dual rate moderate springs at low speeds?

Usually pulling out of parking lots and driveways etc?

I like the look and drop but the pinging noises are getting annoying and embarrassing.

If it’s a shift in the suspension typical for in/out of driveways, I was getting that creak/pop up front.

Checked the front springs and pushed the plastic coil wraps as far down as they would go though they Don’t quite reach as high they should.

I did that then cleaned them off and sprayed white lithium grease all around and no longer an issue.

I had the same problem when I put the mild springs on my Model 3, which was super embarrassing. Contacted UP, and they sent those black plastic coil wrap things, which weren't included in the original box.

However, I didn't notice an improvement to the ride and was bottoming out on moderate speed bumps (again embarrassing). Plus it costs about 500 to have them installed and would have cost a lot to just put those coil wraps on.

So, I ended up paying for them to be totally removed from my care, returning to the OEM springs. Not wanting to push the problem to someone else and not getting any real response from UP, I ended up throwing them away.

I live in Florida, and I think that's my problem. It seems if you don't live near their physical location, the support is very lacking. Installing their products presents a risk that's too dire for me.

I’m in the same boat I think. I live in Florida too. I’ve had many springs installed in the past on modded cars but never hear of these pinging noises. I wonder if it’s because of the dual rate compression of the springs. I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I’m still waiting on UPP for some answers.

**Update**

Eric from UPP is working with me on getting it situated. If anyone having similar issues please reach to them.

I had the luxury coilovers installed today and am having the same issue. I’m honestly generally unimpressed with them so far, though I’ll give them a few days to settle in.

The installer (a very experienced and well-regarded Tesla specialist) said they adjusted them as high as they could and the car is still dropped a bit, which means I’m now scraping bottom entering my driveway. The ride is not any better than stock so far, and every bump you drive over is a loud thump. I hear random pops all the time when turning at low speeds.

I’m reading this thread and I’m really not understanding what is going on. I asked my friend who got the milds installed at UP and this is his response. I can only attribute to my own personal moderate springs and he has a Y and there are no noises. The FB post shows pictures of the height and there’s plenty of clearance from his photos...enough to stick a whole arm inside the wheel well

Hi @YGOHOME, welcome to TMC! Sorry to see your first post here is a challenge you are experiencing but rest assusred we are 100% here for you with our rapid response and 100% money back satisfaction guarantee. Although it is about to be Christmas Eve and our staff has gone home for the holidays, we will dedicate our time during the holidays and as required to learn more and to assist you and your installer as best we can.

Also we are always happy to field all installation/setup questions at our usual [email protected] account.

What you are describing is quite the opposite of the routine experience of dozens of our thrilled Model Y clients. Our coilovers can go above stock height and can be set very soft as well. We are certain that we can assist you and your installer in adjusting them to your liking. We will follow up with you via DM and will move the conversation to direct email since we're giving our staff some time off for the holiday. Rest assured you'll have our best support including during holidays to ensure you get the same result (from indeed the same components) as this video below. The only difference between your kit and the video below is in setup/config which we are here to assist with. Our products have been loved for years and all function as designed, for this reason we have a no questions asked money back guarantee as well for peace of mind for all of our clients.

We've sent you a DM with our President's direct email since we'd like to give the rest of our staff some time off and to fully support you as close to 24/7 as humanly possible.

Wishing you a happy holidays from the UP team!

Thanks for the quick response. No need to interrupt your holidays - everybody should take time with their families after a year like this one. I'll reach out next week.

I suspect we're missing something obvious - the coilovers seem incredibly well designed. I've reached out to my installer as well - I'm sure we'll get it sorted out. Thanks again.

It bums me out that people turn to forms to rant and degrade a company that I have had such a positive experience.

Soon as I purchased my MYP, I ordered springs online from UPP. When I had installation questions - as there were not MY directions yet, but I was assured the M3 directions should be more than 90% the same - I tackled the job my self in my garage. When I had questions, I called UPP in Cali and they were quick to answer my questions (all two of them).

Email is convenient. Text and tweets are alright - but nothing replaces the good old fashioned phone call - where you have a conversation.

Also no aftermarket manufacturer item is ever going to be dead on perfect. There’s TONS that I have read: MPP, redwood, eibach, SPL, etc that has exhibited to some degree of NVH. When you modify something you have to take that possibility or concept in. Also a screenshot from a veteran here at TMC that tracks his car and has tried every single aftermarket manufacturer

It bums me out that sharing my honest experience is characterized as a rant and degrading.

Lots of us are not as savvy as you and aren’t able to install something like this on our own. The coilovers are pitched as this night and day difference. So for somebody like me who desperately wants to improve the ride on the Y, plunks down $2500 and another $900 on an installer certified by UP, it’s frustrating to have what I have now without knowing how to fix it or whose “fault” it is.

I’m thrilled to see such a strong response from UP. After the holiday I’ll work with them and my installer and I’m sure we’ll get it sorted out. I’ll gladly come back and post about it when it does. But I don’t think it’s unfair to let others know that an aftermarket mod like this may not go as seamlessly as you’d like.
