Placed an order for an SR+ (black/black/aero/AP) on 5/21 and received a VIN of 399,xxx on 5/27. Based on this, will it come with HW3 or HW2.5?

Everything built since sometime in mid-April 2019 has had an AP3 computer in it, so unless the car was somehow hanging around for a month and a half before they gave you the VIN it pretty much has to be AP3.

You most likely have HW3 but you can confirm by asking Tesla what the date of manufacture is. If it was after 4/12 it has HW3. They can also look up the VIN in their system and confirm it has HW3 while you have them on the phone or chat.

My car was made on 04/10/2019 and it has HW3. Just made the cutoff

My car built May 19 has HW2.5
Another member has build date May 18 with FSD and it came with HW2.5

This is incorrect. 4/12 or later many still have HW2.5 apparently.

My guess is they made a clean cutover at the manufacturing step where the AP computer is installed, but then cars get out of order for some reason.

The other likely option is they found a block of older computers in inventory they didn't think they had, and wanted to exhaust them.
