Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

UBI . . . F no. Let's not talk UBI, too politically charged.

    So… Highland is out…

Could be, I was basing solely on those I've seen tear-down information for. Berlin is a bit hazy on that mark, nothing 100% confirmed. Regardless, my main point was how many different manufacturing configurations of the same car there are. Just because we don't see a cast 3 yet, doesn't mean...

    So… Highland is out…

If rumors are true, they are not the same size castings. The Y uses casts from a 6,000-lb press (that's force, but it corresponds with size). The CT from a 9,000-lb press (much much bigger). For the $25,000 car, the rumor is this week that Tesla wants to try to use a single piece casting...

    So… Highland is out…

This was speculated, but never confirmed. It's not a lot different than the old 3 in the "guts", so if Tesla wanted minimal production impact, this is how they would go. They would not have to teardown and rebuild the production lines, etc. This doesn't, however, exclude a cast version in the...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Also bear in mind that Telsa has IIRC 1-2 periods a year where employees can purchase shares at a discount via the SPP (15% sticks out in my head for some reason, but someone here will know for sure). That's in incredible arbitrage opportunity for those employees, even if they have zero...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

At least GM was offering a discount to dealers if they showed up to the factory and picked up the vehicles. Limited volume that way, but better than none.

Or simply drive by wire, with an adjusting turn degree by speed. Would have been a more elegant solution.

    So… Highland is out…

Wheel is default on S/X now, Yoke is an additional cost (no joke).

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Yeah, can't make this *sugar* up. Simulation.
  11. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

Not true. People didn't like the Yoke, and the wheel made a strong comeback for the S/X because of that.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

So, for the big 3 and any suppliers that are unionized, what are their options? Can they "bust" the unions and go fill positions with non-union labor? Will they ramp up production in plants abroad? Seems to me their only course of action is to try to get the UAW as low as possible, and then...

    Off topic galore

I'm a doc. We don't come close to $1000/h. The hospitals however do. Facility charges are bonkers. Physician charges are regulated by insurance. We can "bill" whatever, but insurance will not pay anything over their set rates.
  14. bkp_duke

    Off topic galore

Going to have to go dig into this, but IIRC Elon said Tesla paid better than UAW in total compensation. EDIT - devil is in the details. Apparently Tesla pays $45-50/h including benefits vs. 64-76 for the big 3 with UAW. BUT, and this is the key - Tesla's figure does not include stock options...

    So… Highland is out…

Yeah, I want a Performance (Plaid if they fulfill my dream and make one of those for the 3). I was in the sales/service center last week. They said they couldn't put me any kind of list yet for a Highland 3 here in the states.

    Russia/Ukraine conflict

The ship is toast, but the dry dock looks pretty much intact.
  17. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

We're fine, probably all bored waiting on more details for Highland (is there a P version, when will it come to our respective countries, etc. etc.).

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Don't overlook Fremont as well. If the Highland 3 does use casting, then a revamped line in Fremont would be shorter, and have higher throughput. Speculation on my part, admittedly.

    So… Highland is out…

Come drive in Arizona or Southern California and try Dark Mode. Things are screen are literally not visible in that situation. I'm guessing the brightness might be a tad more than the northern latitudes.

    So… Highland is out…

It following the sunset and sunrise times for you latitude and longitude is what I have gathered. Part of the hand shake with the cell phone sensors is to get a validation of the time and location (it's a location "verify" to what GPS gives, which can also take some time to sync up properly -...

    So… Highland is out…

But it's not startup, it's a "resume", and yes it does do an NTP sync when it regains access to network. Raise your hand if you have had root access to more than one Tesla. /me raises hand.
  22. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

It does, but like most Linux based systems it does an NTP time sync multiple times per day.
  23. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

Yes, the computer use an NTP server ping in order to get "local time" from a cell phone tower. If you have poor cell reception, it will stay in it's current config until it gets that, or establishes a WiFi connection.
  24. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

2016 was an overlap period, around Oct Tesla moved to their own hardware (AP2). So, likely was AP1, but could have been AP2.

Interesting. I rarely experience that. Wonder if it's some deep buried setting causing the behavior.

With "friends" like that, who needs enemies? $5 says they were funded by the local auto industry, erm, I mean "green" team.

    So… Highland is out…

Then open the car door and wait a few seconds for the computer to come on and make the adjustments. Problem solved. The car is in "sleep" mode to keep battery drain to a minimum. For it to have the screen instantly dimmed in that situation, the computer would need to be on all the time, which...
  29. bkp_duke

    So… Highland is out…

It already does this. The car automatically changes the screen to "dark mode" at the exact sunset time for your timezone, and then puts it back on white mode for sunrise. This can be overridden if one desires, but that's the "auto" setting functionality.

    So… Highland is out…

So, the devil here, is actually in the details. The radar that Tesla was using was a low-resolution version. And to be frank, it was the root of the vast majority of the phantom braking. Radar in itself isn't bad, but the low-res version Tesla used cause arguably as many problems as it...

    So… Highland is out…

One area to definitely improve upon. I have 4 local service centers, and it took trial and error to figure out which one was the "good" one, comparatively. But, they have treated me right in the past few years and consistently shown improvement. Had a strut go out in my P3D last week...

Yeah, you are able to (as a mature individual) to separate those out and understand the difference. Most people are emotionally driven, and clearly cannot. But . . . this thread was about Highland, so we are very far afield from that now.

The original line was all hand work for the Semi. A semi-automated prototype line is the next step. Over time, that will get upgraded with robots, etc. and made as automated as possible. Pretty much how Tesla has done all their other lines in the past as well. The Semi is so different from...

    So… Highland is out…

3 posts below yours, it seems to pile on some hate, but each to their own. But regardless...

Hey, I curse plenty at my cars. But I've driven pretty much ALL the alternative EVs (I travel a lot for work - I make it a point to rent out the competition when possible). Not counting charging, which Tesla is light-years ahead on that experience, the experience of the competition always...

    So… Highland is out…

In the video, I could clearly see the brake lights of the car 2 in front before the accident, simply because that car was in the leftmost portion of their lane. That could be Vision, or Radar that picked up on it and braked. You guys will complain far less once you have access to FSDb over...

My beef, if not clear, was the title. 99% of people won't read past the title and will therefore lump Teslas in with all other EVs. This should have been in the title, otherwise it is deceptive.

See above. Also, do you really think Tesla would move to something LESS rigid than what everyone else uses?
  43. bkp_duke

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I disagree (and I do have a degree in Chemistry). Basically, his last point is the most valid - we don't build ICE engines from sheet metal. They are big CAST blocks (usually aluminum). When done right, cast Aluminum can have rigid properties that surpass steel.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

My beef is that should have been in the title, not buried. "EVs that aren't Teslas have a road trip problem". Tell me they don't have an agenda . . . without telling me they don't have an agenda. ;)

Call up your local installers. Often these get tossed out because the powerwalls get installed in pairs, on the ground. A local solar+battery installer should have a spare, or should be able to get you one after they complete an installation.
