New Zealanders, any idea if I can import a left hand, USA charging, Model S?

My first S was a UK model (i.e. RHD). My second came from Aussie. Oddly, the shipping cost was the same. There is zero support from Tesla for vehicles here, they won't even send (warranty) parts over.

Stop the Press! Tesla announces REAL HP numbers for P85D and P90L

Or to quote Tom Waits “The large print giveth and the small print taketh away.” The problem and source of so much grief being the lack of even fine print, until very recently.

Stop the Press! Tesla announces REAL HP numbers for P85D and P90L

Just to confuse matters, the metric versions of the website list a different number again for the P85D's battery limited output. My calculator says 376 kW = 504 hp, quite different to 463 hp.

The D thread Australia & New Zealand

Yes, you'll note that the D was announced after I took delivery of my P85+. Since I'm getting the D through Australia it will only be a 5 seater, and my wife will drive our 7 seater.
  14. S

The D thread Australia & New Zealand

I've also been bumped from June to July to late July. I think the delay is all down to the "US West Coast Labor (sic) Negotiations". They may even have to ship our cars out of the eastern US.

Interesting SuperCharging data & charts on E-pack battery (P85D)

Oh that's easy, the "speed" calculation is calculated from the power level, but is heavily filtered / smoothed which introduces a delay. You'll notice on an AC charge the power level is constant almost immediately but the speed ramps up very slowly over several minutes. Steve

    First NZ Model S

We reached Cape Reinga on the evening of Jan 1, and Bluff on the evening of Jan 10. Charging was a mixture of private 32 Amp three phase sockets, 32, 16, and 10 Amp single phase sockets, and a very few type 1 (30A) and type 2 (32Ax3) public charging stations.

3-phase 32 amp recharge for model S with dual chargers

You don't seem to distinguish between the AC input to the charger, the DC output from the charger, and the resulting "available" Wh from the battery. The "km/h" charging rate reflects the rate that typical range is increasing by. Typical range is an attribute of the potential battery output. The...

3-phase 32 amp recharge for model S with dual chargers

I call BS. My typical has never changed from 200 Wh/km. I believe it is tailored to the specific configuration but not driving history. DITB, even with a constant "typical" Wh/km rating, there will be varying AC consumption depending on the efficiency of the charger at that particular line...

    Tesla in Australia

My experience is different. Over long trips I find "typical range" to be very close to my usage with cruise control set to 100 km/h. This is in a P85+, not the most efficient model. One thing I notice is that trips always start with a horrendous overage consumption, as if there's some number...

    Mobile charging for Australia

I don't see why it has to be either / or with Type 1 vs Type 2. Tethered Type 1 charging at 30 km/h suits long dwell times in secure locations, whereas socketed Type 2 (>100km/h) is great for insecure public locations / road trips beyond Tesla's supercharger corridor.

    Mobile charging for Australia

It's going great. It's still my primary means of charging the car, 30A single phase is plenty at home for the amount of driving I typically do. Steve

Tesla S With 85 kWh Pack - Charging Speeds.

With regards to charging speed, a reasonably accurate rule of thumb is that you gain 1 km of range per hour for every amp x phase at 230 V.

    RHD Model 'S' - importing ?

I would guess Not yet, No, and No. Steve - - - Updated - - - Warranty only valid in Australia (for now). What servicing?
  34. S

    Mobile charging for Australia

The proximity indicator is not connected, so a sudden disconnect relies on the mechanical interface disconnecting the pilot wire before the power lines. I wouldn't recommend pulling the cable under load.
  35. S

    RHD Model 'S' - importing ?

I'll say. I've heard figures like $1800 for shipping. Our GST is 15%, still much less than LCT and stamp duty.
  36. S

    Mobile charging for Australia

The resistors go at both ends but there is no wire connecting the proximity pins at each end. So there's no issue with parallel resistors etc.

    RHD Model 'S' - importing ?

VERY important update for kiwis interested in bringing a Model S in from Australia. Tesla Australia have a process in place for you to "take delivery" in Australia without registering or paying any Australian taxes. From that point you can ship the car to NZ and just pay NZ GST on arrival.
  38. S

    First NZ Model S

I spent most of the journey with cruise control on 101 km/h. I didn't slow down towards the end of the trip, but there is a significant elevation change from Ohakune (590m) to my house (about 10m).
  39. S

    Mobile charging for Australia

Yes. Not so. The car end is 62196 which has resistor coding. The only public reference I have handy is p.24 (23) of this doc: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/zevprog/2009symposium/presentations/preuschoff_oestreicher.pdf
  40. S

    Mobile charging for Australia

Yes it works as you describe but there are resistors at both ends of the cable. In addition to what you describe the car is supposed to also limit the current to the minimum of the pilot and the cable resistor.
  41. S

    First NZ Model S

I've had quite a bit of experience driving EVs. The "typical range" estimate on the Model S is pretty close, and it's not hard to compare it against Google's distance measure. My Model S Nav system doesn't work here - it is probably pretty good too. Steve
  42. S

    First NZ Model S

It's quite difficult to predict, because the amount of energy you can extract from the pack depends on so many variables. The easiest to predict and control (usually) is the power draw. The higher the draw the more gets lost (colloquially known as internal resistance). Other losses you can't...

    Mobile charging for Australia

The 62196 standard used by the Tesla expects a resistor to signal the cable capacity to the car. Without it you could overload the adaptor by connecting say a 60A J1772 to your Tesla through it.
