“Routing With No Traffic Data” - Causes?

On my end-of-day commute, I consistently get the “Routing With No Traffic Data” caution on the map display, at pretty much the same place every time. I still have LTE connectivity, and a few miles back when I started my route, Tesla Maps had traffic data, and if I peer at my phone, Apple Maps...

    Electric planes

Agree, but too many were “new for the sake of new” IMO. Maybe things are starting to unfreeze a bit with the blended wing-body stuff, at least for cargo and tanker aircraft; I’m not sure that passengers would take well to sitting way off the centerline in roll maneuvers though.

    Electric planes

Burt Rutan is not really any kind of expert in type certification of aircraft; pretty much all of his designs were one-offs and/or designed for kit building, not production aircraft. And Rutan didn’t certify the Beechcraft Starship - Rutan built an 80% scale demonstrator for Beech, then Beech...

    Electric planes

And your point is…? Again, the FAA primarily mandates reliability. If you can demonstrate to the FAA via rigorous design review and testing that the failure likelihood of your simplex vehicle management system (that’s what the fly-by-wire system is called) meets the FAA’s probability of loss of...

    Electric planes

”manned drones“ is a bit of an oxymoron ;) As someone else said, the FAA mandates reliability: how many loss of control and loss of aircraft accidents per flight hour, where the causal factor is failure of the aircraft, not pilot error, poor maintenance, etc. Redundancy is one way to achieve...

    audi etron gt rs

If the upcoming A6 e tron is within a reasonable distance to its hype…I maybe foresee one in my garage in a couple of years, taking the place of my M3 (which is a very good car but I’m starting to tire of its compromises, all of which I went into eyes-open). But…that’s a good-sized “if”; we...

    Tesla App Using Apple Maps?

I was using the app today on my iPad, and noticed this: I opened the app on my iPhone as well, and got the same thing. It appears that the Tesla app is using Apple Maps, at least on Apple’s devices. Anyone noticed this before? Has it been this way all along but the logo is new? Personally, I’m...

2020 charge door won’t stay open

Check the log; there should be an error code showing up. Send it to Tesla Service. My charge door on my 2021 M3 had the opposite problem: sometimes it wouldn’t open. Tesla Mobile Service replaced it under warranty. Took about 30 minutes.

[Tesla wall connector Gen 3] Commissioning Error

Keep trying and it may work eventually. Tesla seems to use the same crappy WiFi setup in their cars and the HPWC; I always have to try multiple times to get it to accept the password. I don’t have that problem with any other WiFi appliance.

Is it possible to get 250 miles on the interstate with a 2022 M3P?

I recently did a 250 mile round trip in my ‘21 M3LR; 90% of the trip was limited-access divided highway with the prevailing traffic running between 65-70mph; there were maybe 10 miles or so of slow freeway traffic in the 20mph range. Nice SoCal weather. Charged to 100% before leaving and got...

Best hours to recharge my Tesla in San Diego?

Which is about two-thirds of what I typically charge in a month. TOU5 works best for me. But if one only has one BEV, and/or doesn’t drive more than a few dozen miles per week, has a small house, has solar…a different plan may be better. Everyone is different.

Resolved: Tesla Wall Connector Overheat Issue - In case it helps anyone

Tesla offered to send me the correct HPWC, but I decided I would just keep this one; not worth the hassle. I did spend $50 on a J1772-to-Tesla adapter to dedicate to the new HPWC, but this way I’m future-proofed if I switch over to a non-Tesla at some point (that decision is at least another 3+...

New J1772 Wall Connector Installed, may have made the wrong decision

Many thanks for the reply! After I posted yesterday, I read some of the various threads about the “CCS compatibility“ update and figured out that I was seeing that show up in the app because my M3 (September 2021) wasn’t built with the right parts to be compatible with the CCS chargers. (My...

New J1772 Wall Connector Installed, may have made the wrong decision

I just got forcibly converted to the J1772 HPWC, at least for now… My 2.5-year-old Gen3 HPWC started overheating and automatically reducing charge rate; I contacted Tesla last week, they pulled some logs, determined that my HPWC was irreversibly dying, so they said they’d ship me a replacement...

Resolved: Tesla Wall Connector Overheat Issue - In case it helps anyone

Well, that’s interesting… Got the new HPWC today, noticed it was a spiffy black instead of white but OK, installed it, commissioned it (took forever for it to log in to my range extended WiFi, just like my Teslas; they must use the same crappy WiFi transceivers in the cars and the HPWC...

The new media controls are crap

I absolutely navigate to work and to home because that way I get better info on traffic conditions, both on the map and from monitoring time remaining estimate. Although there’s one spot on my commute where I have an option to take an alternate route (not one the navigation is showing as an...

Resolved: Tesla Wall Connector Overheat Issue - In case it helps anyone

Aaaaandddd…mine too. Looking at the car’s notifications log, I started noticing regular “charging rate reduced” entries, got in touch with Tesla a couple of days ago, they did some investigating, and determined that my 2.5 year old early Gen3 HPWC is in the process of failing (not dead yet...

Siruis XM working in the web browser-with some issues

I haven’t tried this and probably won’t, but the obvious thing to me is a larger interface that is easier to manipulate. I stream SXM from my phone, which I keep on the center console inductive charger, and changing stations is not easy (and I’m not interested in the Alexa voice assistant method...

    Waymo

Uh, no. That said: high frequency “noise” being input into a control effector input (in this case, the front wheels, which are mechanically connected to the steering wheel) is undesirable but is not necessarily a big deal. As long as the noise is of insufficient power to cause premature wear...

    Alternative to HomeLink module

Check their website; there are a few odd kinds of openers that are more finicky for the install; not sure if Liftmaster is one or not. They got their Apple HomeKit integration done a while ago, and it works great.

    Waymo

That’s basic undergrad control systems engineering; your forward path command will, in the absence of errors and uncertainty, achieve the desired tracking of the trajectory command. But that’s never enough in the real world; you have to have feedback of how well you are actually tracking the...

GPS issue since the past few weeks

Use a handheld GPS in one of the problem areas; if it can show 4+ satellites in state 5 (code + carrier track), and your Tesla GPS is still flipping out, then it’s absolutely not a GPS constellation problem, external GPS interference issue, bad satellite geometry, etc. If you know an exact time...

    Electric planes

Liquid hydrogen is not preferred for rocket first stage applications, and it’s not really a cryogenic issue. The first stage‘s job is to get the rest of the stack out of the atmosphere, and so the first stage spends most of its time in the atmosphere, where aerodynamic drag is a major player...

Moderator note: The following three posts were merged from a different thread. Anybody heard if there are any plans to update the 3-year-old Supercharger station in the Carlsbad CA La Costa Beacon shopping center from V2 to V3? there are two V3 Superchargers in San Diego North County, but...

Should I be worried? [about this tire damage]

I had something similar happen several years ago to my Audi A6 which I no longer own; I got another 15k miles out of the tire, no problem. I checked it regularly to make sure no cord was showing, it wasn’t getting worse, etc.

    EV Spotting Thread

Coastal SoCal (well south of LA) I‘m seeing a Rivian R1T pretty regularly; was next to it in stop and go traffic for several minutes the other day. Had commercial plates with a December sticker. Nice looking vehicle if I were in the ”adventure pickup” market, which I am not ;) Also saw a Lucid...

Unable to patch Tesla Michelin tires

I had a flat recently on one of my OEM Michelin MXM4s, and although the Tesla mobile tire service truck ended up not being able to fix it, it wasn’t because of the foam. (A 3/8ths inch thick piece of welding slag, probably from a local construction site I had driven by just a few minutes before...

So I reserved a Lucid Air

Saw one today in coastal SoCal, with paper temp plates so I assume it was an actual sale, not a dealer car. Looks a lot different in person than in photos IMHO; seems smaller and the belt line looks higher.

Battery Damaged After Hitting Tow Hitch

Not trying to make light of a $12k accident, but it could have been much worse - several years ago, a friend of ours was in fairly heavy but still fast freeway traffic; the car that was two cars in front of of her lost its tow hitch, which proceeded to hit the road, bounce up…and go through the...

What audio source do you use the most?

SXM app on my iPhone + BT to the car. Adequate but nowhere near as convenient as a properly integrated SXM receiver or app. But I knew that going in and still got the car and don’t regret it. (and voice commands via Alexa Auto are a non-starter for me)

    SiriusXM radio on Model 3

SXM is standard in all kinds of lower end cars. It’s not a cost thing, at least not hardware. My suspicion is there’s some kind of licensing that Tesla doesn’t want to do, or maybe Elon doesn’t like Martine Rothblatt o_O
  36. M

    SiriusXM radio on Model 3

I view your response as perhaps a bit disingenuous, since just about every new car for the last several years has offered SXM; when it comes to auto audio that’s not bog-standard AM/FM, SXM is probably the most widely available, not a niche choice as you imply.

    Slow Acceleration on highway

This is not what I experience much of the time in my September 2021 M3LR (vision only car). What I’ve had happen regularly is when I press the accelerator to get back to the set speed after TACC has slowed but the offending car is out of the way, once I’m up to speed and start letting off the...

    DARPA flies/tests FSF Blackhawk helicopter

They are not “flown” by human controllers; an MQ-8B/C can accomplish its full mission with a handful of button clicks from the operator. The operator basically tells the aircraft it is cleared to start its engine, launch, execute its mission, approach the ship, and land. Many of these steps...

    SiriusXM radio on Model 3

For me, this falls under my comment about “ways to partially ameliorate”; I personally dislike voice commands for most automotive functions, and do not want to add a third party box to the car to accomplish the functionality anyway. I’m sure there are other people like you who have no...

    SiriusXM radio on Model 3

Given what you’ve said, I recommend you not tackle streaming SXM through the phone over BT. The only way to change channels is on the phone; you have to start the app on your phone; etc. (Yes there are ways to partially ameliorate these and other issues, but it’s still not seamless by a long...

    Sirius XM for Model 3

That’s an option, and probably the best option for many people at this time (including me)…but it’s much inferior to a well-designed, well-implemented native SXM app on the Tesla infotainment system. The ability to set favorites, change channels, etc., using steering wheel controls, and use the...

Any other VW GTI or Golf R converts?

I had a 2016 (Mk7) GTI, 4DR, Autobahn, 6-speed MT; switched to a M3 LR in fall 2021. had about 63k miles on the GTI at the time. Front License plates

I like it a lot. I’d prefer that CA didn’t have the front license plate law, but the license wrap plate looks a heckuva lot better than a plate on a bracket IMHO, and is unobtrusive enough to not bother me that it’s on all the time. But if people want to take the plate off except when there...

    Front License plates

For CA, there’s a company https://licenseplatewrap.com/ that sells DMV-authorized stick-on “wrap” front plates. In most of CA, it’s rare to be ticketed for not having a front plate, but I decided to be legal. Works great on my car.

Mobile Service - Replace All Tires

The post to which I responded said Mobile Service only does full wheel replacements. I pointed out that is not the case. Mobile Service - Replace All Tires

?? Mobile Service can definitely replace tires without a wheel swap. When my MY was six months old, I ran over a bolt that penetrated the right front tire; Mobile Service came out, said it was unrepairable (hole was borderline too big but mostly it was too close to the sidewall, I agreed with...

    Automatic volume increases/decrease

My 2020 MY would consistently decrease the music volume when slowing down, but inconsistently increase the volume when speeding up. Completely undocumented behavior but happened regularly. At some point in 2021, it stopped doing it. My 2021 M3 has never done it. (I’m glad, I hate...

Anyone else dislike the new UI?

I think I’ve driven enough over the last few days to have an informed opinion on the new interface… BLUF: The defog/defrost controls absence from the main screen is a safety hazard and needs fixing ASAP; lack of odometers, especially trip odometers, is a royal PITA. Outside speaker.

According to this thread, Tesla will install the speaker if you want, for a fee ($200 is mentioned). My summer 2020 MY doesn’t have the speaker either but I believe all Y’s are wired for it, so it should be a simple retrofit.
