    2013 Model S P85+ - fully loaded, nearly new

The car is still for sale. I've adjusted the asking price to $105,000. 1,600 miles on the clock currently. Since posting, the only modifications have been LED license plate lighting and window tint (Huper Optik 35% - all around). I am open to offers.

    Firmware 5.0

Couldn't say. I had wanted the update before I leave town for a month. No place to keep my car plugged in and figured the reduced energy usage in sleep mode would be nice. They felt for me. Even went so far as to offer storing my car at the service center and dropping me off at the airport. That...

    Firmware 5.0

Service in Burlingame reiterated that 5.0 is on hold due to issues. The guy there was from Seattle and mentioned they had one or two cars up there that were updated and refused to wake up.

Pano Roof Noise - Factory Fix Coming

Interesting. My car was just in the shop with this as one of my concerns. They didn't mention a forthcoming fix. But in the interim, I have no more whistling but now have lots of scratches on the trim piece in the middle part of the car that they're now going to replace. Here's the texts from...

    Model S - Window Tinting

I had my car done yesterday. Huper Optik 35% all around. Looks terrific. The windshield and panoramic roof remain untinted.

    Firmware 5.0

I got the same response. I'm actually curious about this. Cars in Europe were reported to have version 5.5. I wonder if the same bugs exist there.

    Parking sensors

I supplied Volvo's instructions in a previous post and also sent them to my contacts at Tesla. Glad they might be going this route. I did the install on a friends car. It was trivially easy to put holes in the bumper.

    Parking sensors

I did too. I lived in Europe for several years. I'm perfectly fine at parallel parking. Here in SF spaces are difficult to find and often very tight, worse than in Europe. We also have hills, which make the S in Model S stand for sled. It's just personal preference. I'm sure as I have more seat...

    Parking sensors

Keeping it for now. Model S needs additional driver aids at this price point. Now that they're being taken seriously I hope it'll happen. It's a breeze parking my BMW just about anywhere. With Model S, I find myself avoiding certain places in order to keep it pristine.

    Parking sensors

I agree with this without knowing the specifics. Now we wait I guess. I had a chance to play with the sensors and some other options on a friend's car over the weekend. He sacrificed the Plus package to get the other options he wanted. I can't wait for the sensors and fog lights. I also want...

    Firmware 5.0

I'm all for any measures that save power. Model S is a unique experience for me in that I'm not used to a car being ready to go once my butt hits the seat. All my previous cars had an initial warm up period, whether for the engine or electronics. I'm used to this, so much so that I still...

    Model S Pole Crash.

I'm glad she walked away as testament to the safety of Model S. I'm also happy she will face consequences for her actions. High performance cars are no joke. I've always said that BMW M, AMG, etc. should make buyers take vehicle car control and handling classes before they are ever allowed to...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I admitted that it was a selfish desire, yes. It's just the way I do things. I'm already running Android 4.3 on my Note, iOS 7 on my apple devices, OS X Mavericks on my apple computers, and windows 8.1 on my PCs. I work in IT. I like being an early adopter. I actively provide feedback in all of...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

Back when I worked for a major bank we'd distribute firmware to remote branches via usb for updating ATMs that still had dial up modems. Numerous safeguards existed and it never was a problem. The car has connectivity. If a usb update is attempted the car can phone home to ensure the update is...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

A simple integrity check and quick phone home to validate would solve this concern. Any evidence of tampering would abort the update. There are ways to do this securely that can thwart any wannabe hackers. Other OEMs don't seem to have a problem releasing updates via usb.

Nav System after v5.0: wishes, wants, Google maps and more...

It is odd when no other navigation platform I've used handles it in this fashion. Even the cluster orients labels correctly. I have no issue reading upside down but it does take longer for my brain to process. I hope they address this in a future release. I'll wait to see it in action before I...

    Firmware 5.0

In reading the release notes, it says street labels will be upside down when driving south in direction mode. That seems... odd. I wonder if the map application will ever be updated to use the new Maps API with vector tiles, etc.

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

This thread kind of derailed so let's see if I can get it back on track. I don't like that Tesla wants to potentially prioritize updates over WiFi. I don't have it where I park, so I depend on 3G. My coverage is spotty but it exists enough apparently to get me the .61 update. When a new...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I can make WiFi available, but I shouldn't have to in order to get updates sooner rather than later. And no sense in sitting at a Starbucks, because there's no guarantee an update will download during the time. There needs to be a manual update check, and if someone pays for 3G through a Tesla...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

This is exactly what they need to do. But probably won't. I'm curious to see what the connectivity packages cost. It's my understanding you purchase it through Tesla. I guarantee it's going to be marked up.

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I have no idea what their plan infrastructure looks like but am curious to know. Talking to Service and Engineering today, they actually already do this. There are certain cars that are prioritized for updates over others. This gets the update in the field, on real metal, so they can test and...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

Short term, yes, it will probably save them money. I suspect they have some kind of pay-as-you-go pricing with AT&T, as opposed to a data bucket allocated to each car. The less data each car uses, the less money Tesla spends. This makes sense. And I agree with it. BUT... Long term, they still...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

Right. So I agree with them, and think WiFi updates are a good thing. But I think they need to provide better alternatives to get updates sooner. After all, there are 2 types of people who bought this car: the techie/gearheads, and everybody else. As the former, I want updates immediately. A...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I'm not disappointed. I just think it's silly. Not everybody has access to WiFi in their garage. I honestly didn't know the car even had WiFi capabilities until these recent firmware discussions came up. Even then I was expecting the car to act as a hotspot and not the other way around. The...

    Firmware 5.0

I wonder if there's a timeout. Might be useful to engage at night when the screen brightness can be distracting.
  27. wdimagineer

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

The other problem... Minimal service (if any at all) in our garage. I do have a mobile LTE hotspot I might utilize. But as mentioned above, I don't think there's any way to trigger an update. So it would be luck of the draw.

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I'm 16 stories up. I run Aruba wireless gear in my condo. I'm thinking about possibly trying a directional antenna aimed at the area of the garage where my car typically sits.
  29. wdimagineer

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

Sure. But those that can't? That's why my final point was that if I pay for connectivity (at some point - when announced) can I get in with the cool kids using WiFi? I suspect Tesla will, at a minimum, potentially have to offer some kind of free connectivity package. You might lose maps and...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

If you're using a feature phone or a non-iOS smartphone, yes, this is true. Updates are queued and distributed to devices using various algorithms to determine eligibility, typically after months of carrier testing and bloatware injection. When it comes to iOS devices, Apple controls the deploy...

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

I live in a condo. I use Webpass. Ethernet connectivity delivered directly to my condo.
  32. wdimagineer

    FW updates OTA vs WiFi?

This update prioritization strategy does not sit well with me. My car parks in a garage at home and at the office with no wifi penetration. I bought this car in part to be an early adopter and receive software updates over the air. Hopefully those that do pay for connectivity will be...

Turning LEDs instead of swiveling headlights?

I should also add that the purpose of the LED lights is to illuminate corners and crosswalks for pedestrian safety. They're not a substitute for adaptive headlamps that swivel to illuminate the road when driving through curves, etc. Those typically have no threshold for deactivation except at...

    Firmware 5.0

I hope he is! My car is in service and I'm due to collect it tomorrow or Thursday. After seeing this post I emailed my service advisor to see if I can be updated, should this be accurate. For those with previous service experience, are updates typically done by default or did you have to...

    Parking sensors

In the beginning I thought so, but it turns out that the charge port is not attached to the tail lamp assembly. The only difference is the side marker LEDs on European models are used to communicate charge status. But as long as they light up red when the headlights are on, this should be OK...

Turning LEDs instead of swiveling headlights?

I find these lights useful. I've had them for many years in my German cars. But, I wish they would turn on when you activate the turn signal and not just turn the wheel. This is how my German cars did it. As others have pointed out, you're already committed to turning when they turn on. They...

    Parking sensors

Anything is possible if you're willing to pay. Tesla has a strong opportunity to help existing owners increase value and satisfaction by providing authorized retrofits. I know they're listening and I'm confident they'll do the right thing. In all my years of retrofitting stuff on cars the...

    Random Model S sightings

Yes please. Not aware if my local stores have a new copy yet. I'm also 99% positive the turn signal repeater did not say "Signature" on it. It definitely wasn't multi-coat Red. The car also had no capacity designation, just "Model S" on the rear and no plates.
  47. wdimagineer

    Parking sensors

BMW, Volvo and others offer retrofits. You missed an example I posted. Volvo offers rear camera, front blind view camera, navigation, parking sensors, fog lights and many other options as retrofits after the fact. It's limited with other manufacturers to things like satellite radio, but it...

    Random Model S sightings

Strange Model S Sighting Today Outside SF, heading south on 101 around 3:45pm. Signature Red. Nothing out of the ordinary, until I saw the car had parking sensors in the factory positions and fog lights. I also noticed the rear turn signal blinked amber. Did early cars do this? I thought it was...

    Parking sensors

The sensors will be sourced from a third party and packaged to Tesla specifications. This means they'll have a Tesla part number. Any ECU will have a Tesla branding. But it's definitely not something they're manufacturing on their own. There's no confirmation officially that cars have a wiring...

    Parking sensors

I doubt it. There was a quote from Elon somewhere that said he and JB didn't like the look of the parking sensor circles. Continental, which makes various automotive systems - including parking sensors, is already a supplier. They build the air suspension, and probably other components. Their...
