2013 Model S making strange new gear (?) noise while in motion

After some investigation by the SC, they say this is normal and that all their service fleet now doing the same thing. They indicated the copper windings of the rotor are out of alignment. This will eventually lead to a failure, but it might be years before that happens. They stated the...

Vendor Perception - The best way to view your TeslaCam events (Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS!)

This looks great and I was going to give this a try, but it looks like no support for Intel Macs. :(

2013 Model S making strange new gear (?) noise while in motion

Sure, but neutral guarantees the motor is free spinning. It’s not applying torque to the wheels, nor is it using inertia to charge the battery. So, theoretically, this should remove inverter noise from the equation.

2013 Model S making strange new gear (?) noise while in motion

Hello, I have what is a pretty "classic" Model S at this point. It recently started making a new noise I haven't heard before from the drive unit/inverter area. It's not super loud, but it's loud enough to be immediately noticeable to passengers. I've found its directly correlated with wheel...

    Headlights turning off by itself

My 2013 started doing this on both sides. It began on the left, and cycling the lights on and off would fix it. Then it started happening on the right, and very quickly the right wouldn't stay lit at all. When you turn them on it would flash for a second and then go out. So it became pretty...

Think I found replacement lug nuts for the 21" wheels

I know this thread is a bit old, but it's prominently placed in the search results for replacement lug nuts for early Model S. Many of the lugs mentioned in this thread are no longer sold. I found a replacement that looks and works great. Gorilla's 61148FS. The FS brings back the flat top...

Pretty cool they added Shortcuts support, but it makes it a bit useless/dangerous if you have more than one Tesla.

Fix your door that won't open

I just stopped by to ask and Tesla told me they weren’t sure until they got in there how much it would be, but that it might be as much as $1000. They said I’d almost certainly lose my nice chrome metal handle and get a plastic one. Apparently this failure is so common you can buy new...

Fix your door that won't open

Our 2013 is doing this on the drivers' side, now. I'm tempted to just let Tesla fix it if it's the $300-$500, but if they replace the nice metal handle with a plastic one I'll just repair what I have. Anyone happen to know what they typically do these days?

Charging on 110 line in cold weather?

Even in California Bay Area cold (35*F and above, usually), with 120V/15A outlets, once the temp gets really low it just maintains. The app will show it's charging but I'm getting 0 miles per hour. Bumped up to a 20A outlet/adapter (home wiring was already new 20A runs) and I'll get 1-2 mph...

    Condensation in tail lights verdict??

Yup, this is exactly what happens. My Model S always had condensation in the taillight. The SC saw it several times. They repeatedly said its normal. Warranty ran out, and now the LEDs are not illuminating in the exact spot the condensation sits. "The taillights are cracked to allow...

iPhone 12 Pro Max and charging

Sorry, the 2022s have the refreshed interiors that have a different charging pad so this won't work for you. This will work on all pre-refresh Model Y (so ~Feb 2021 and earlier), and Model 3 back to whenever those started coming with wireless charging pads (2019, I think?).

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

I’ve noticed this before, but it seems to take an extremely long time for the UI to show chargers down. When we got there the area was a ghost town. The gas station pumps were running on some kind of backup power and the attendant said power had been out for many hours. The In N Out and...

Persistent 500 Server Error / 540 Vehicle Server Error

Still experiencing this. My app said "Last seen 23 days ago" this morning. But, I just got pushed an update. I'm now on 2021.24.28. Looks like it's been rolling out to MCU1 folks over the past few days. I updated real quick and as of now I'm still connected. We'll see what happens. My...

    540 Server Error

Might want to keep track if it starts getting more frequent. My Model S escalated over a period of months where a reset would get it functional again for weeks, then eventually days, and now it only gets me an hour of functionality.

Persistent 500 Server Error / 540 Vehicle Server Error

Similar debug process here. They say it's not an issue with the car, it's an issue with the app, and there's nothing wrong with the car. They were extremely sensitive about suggesting there was any issue with the car, to the point of nearly yelling at me. They said the Service Center can't do...

    Model s 85D 2015 won't heat

It was inside the DCDC. The technician had to tear apart a good bit of the car and open up the DCDC itself. It's high voltage work, so probably not recommended for customer replacement. At one point it looked like half the "engine bay" was sitting in my driveway. He said I was lucky in that...

    Model s 85D 2015 won't heat

I had something similar happen in my 2013. I know they changed this design at some point and am not sure if it still applies to the 2015s, but within the DCDC there was a fuse for the PTC heater. The fuse blew on my car and had to be replaced, which was handled in a mobile service. There was...

Persistent 500 Server Error / 540 Vehicle Server Error

I think a major difference is that Apple is extremely clear, up-front, about how long you can expect your phone to receive updates, and then they often still exceed those guidelines and provide updates longer. There's nothing like that here. Indeed Tesla indicates it should still work, it just...

Persistent 500 Server Error / 540 Vehicle Server Error

It looked to me like 2021.44.25.2 also has a pretty high install base: 60% of the pre-autopilot fleet on 2020.48.37.8, but 35% on 2021.44.25.2. I don't know what would keep my particular vehicle off of the newer one, but apparently something. I had the LTE upgrade, so it's on the current...

Persistent 500 Server Error / 540 Vehicle Server Error

I don't usually like to reward bad behavior by forking over more money, but I probably would have considered it if I knew it would fix the issue. But they said they've seen new Model S/3/Y with similar issues recently, and they don't have a clue as to what the cause might be. So I might spend...

    Tesla Roadside and Tire availability

    Tesla Roadside and Tire availability

It's not the part you quoted, but are you referring to the tire repair kit? No, it's a Tesla thing. Or was, it sounds like supply chain issues have hit it: Tesla discontinues Tire Repair Kit due to supply shortage, new updated version coming in "several months" Ah, I see what you're saying...

    Tesla Roadside and Tire availability

It's in the sidewall, so needs a new tire. The tires are supposedly between 8/32 and 9/32 in depth, and they're 9/32 brand new, so one new tire seems to make a fair bit more sense than 4 new ones.

    Tesla Roadside and Tire availability

I unfortunately got a flat tire late this past Saturday evening. I have the Tesla tire repair kit and was going to use that, but my luck as it is, the kit was defective on its very first use. So I called Roadside, and the wheel loaner service had just closed 10 minutes prior, so they said it...

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

Tesla OEM vs. RallyArmor mud flaps

It's not that much. I looked up the discussion and there's some argument over whether it's 11mm (1.1 cm, which is maybe where that 1.1 came from) or 15mm. Even actual lowering springs only come in at about 25mm (~1"). The Model 3 Performance was lowered by 10mm. Your car was probably sitting...
  35. Gizmotoy

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

No clear resolution. Tesla leaned heavily on the "are you now or have you ever used a third-party app with the vehicle?" I have used several over the years, so they wanted to try removing those first. I had TeslaFi connected, so I cancelled my account and the problem went away immediately...

Tesla OEM vs. RallyArmor mud flaps

Correct, the pics were where they scrape on the curb on the way up. The Performance lowers the suspension by 1cm or less (I forget the exact amount). There's 2.125" of clearance from the bottom of the flap to the ground. I've had these on about a week and a half now. They scrap over basically...
  37. Gizmotoy

Tesla OEM vs. RallyArmor mud flaps

Right? I also have a laser cutter and was tempted to throw the Tesla ones in, but I couldn’t figure out what they’re made of. There’s actually two materials: the bottom is very flexible, but the part that mounts to the wheel well is rigid and it changes halfway down. I’m pretty sure a sturdy...
  38. Gizmotoy

Tesla OEM vs. RallyArmor mud flaps

A couple reasons. Yes, it does make a pretty bad noise. Over time the bottom might get pretty badly scraped up and ugly. The bending puts pressure on the clips and over time they might fail. Less than ideal, but not critical. On the moulded designs the scraping is what might cause rubbing and...

Windshield sun shade same as model 3?

After having both a Covercraft and a Heatshield, while I love the perfect fit, I hate that they’re huge and unwieldy. The HeatShield in particular can be difficult to roll up if you don’t get it tight enough at the start, and both take up a good bit of room in the car to store it. If you’re...

Tesla OEM vs. RallyArmor mud flaps

I'm starting to get some chips and damage to the rear fenders of my Model Y, so was reading through all of the mud flap threads here. There are quite a few of them, and I wanted to get an idea of which flaps to buy. My main stipulation is that they not be the moulded kind that sit over the...

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

2020.48.37 is the newest release available for my vehicle. They see the behavior in the logs and think there might be a software fix, but needed more time to figure it out so they pushed my appointment back a couple days. We'll see.

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

Thank you. I'm reading through this now. We actually had "Energy Saving" Off and "Stay Connected" On, so the vehicle would never sleep anyway. Even in that configuration it would only cycle them after many hours. As part of debugging I changed those settings and the behavior continued...

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

Darn, thanks for the insights. I was able to schedule a shockingly-fast mobile service for tomorrow, so I'll try to get the latest on this. These devices have a very limited number of open/close cycles (usually in the mid tens of thousands), so it's a lot of wear for our vehicles if it's...

    Contactors opening/closing repeatedly

My 2013 P85 has, in the past few days, started exhibiting an unusual behavior: when plugged in, but not charging, I can hear the contactors cycling over and over again. It does the characteristic "clack-clack", then about 4 minutes later the single clunk of them opening, a few second pause...

Sorry for the book, quick summary at bottom. It's been awhile since I had this fixed, and long enough that this probably won't get anyone directly in trouble. Getting this fixed was awful, and Tesla either lied to me or at the very least repeatedly made statements that weren't true. After 4...

While I can't speak directly for this Model Y iteration, on the Model S version, which uses the same design and presumably the same material, this doesn't work.
