Powerwall Companion - updated Windows app

This looks like a great app and I learned about it just as I was getting to install Powerwall Dashboard. Can anyone that is familiar with both apps tell me how they compare? As a native Windows app, using Companion is much more appealing to me because it's a lot easier to get it going. Whereas...

Downsides to parallel strings with solar roof?

I have four strings on my solar roof and they are wired parallel in two pairs. I've known this for awhile but never knew there were any downsides to this. But perusing through some threads, it sounds like there are downsides. The ones I've seen discussed are reduced production due to shade and...

I set my powerwall backup reserve to 100% - Does it matter?

In your example, at 20% you don't draw anything from the grid and you send a lot less than if you set your reserve tot 100%. At 100% you draw and send much more, but the cost to you is the same. So why not leave it at 100% so you can have the backup reserve? Is your goal to have greater...

I set my powerwall backup reserve to 100% - Does it matter?

I'm on a flat rate plan and wonder if it makes any difference what I set my backup reserve to? Before I had PTO I would set the reserve very low so that I would import as little as possible. But after I got PTO I set the backup reserve to 100% because I figured it doesn't make a difference what...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

I have an access point less than three feet from the gateway so that's definitely not the problem here. But I seriously doubt that user's conclusion is correct. If so, we would all have dropouts like this every time our internet went down or we had to reboot our router or modems. Besides...

    Is this clipping?

Looks like you are getting the full 11.4 kW and more than 7x your rated output (which Tesla told me is the high end). Lucky you.
  7. U

    Is this clipping?

One of those threads is from me. And I now know not to expect 11.3 kW. However, when I am only getting 8 kW on a cloudless, sunny, summer day, that's a full 30% below what my system is rated for. Maybe that is just how it's going to be for me but that seems like a lot. Anyway, I called support...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

Thanks for sharing that. I don't have the dropouts on my powerwall graph that you have but I have PW+ so I'll call PW support and hope some troubleshooting will identify the problem before Tier 2 gets back to me.
  9. U

    Is this clipping?

I called Tesla support about a couple of issues. One is being sent to Tier 2. The other was answered, but I think incorrectly. The other issue is that my system is rated for 11.3 kW but I usually top out between 8-8.5. This is what my production on a typical sunny day looks like for me. The...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

It sounds like the issues you have don't necessarily have to do with powerwall (unless you consider the PW+ inverter part of the PW) but PW support was the most helpful. I don't think my powerwalls are the cause of my problems (unless it's the inverters) because I keep my powerwalls at 100% and...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

I called today and the person I talked to could see there was an issue but she couldn't diagnose it. She created a ticket and escalated to tier 2. She said they'll get back to me with whatever the issue is in 10-14 days. And then who knows how long it will be for any necessary repairs. She said...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

Nope! Not back to normal, I didn't look carefully enough. Something is still very wrong today. In the morning it looks like I was not producing at full capacity, just like yesterday. Then I suddenly dropped to zero production for a period and then it surged back to normal. It's almost like...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

So today my production looks like it is back to normal and I didn't do anything. Still gonna call Tesla to see if they can identify what the heck happened yesterday. If something is failing hopefully they can confirm it and order whatever I need before it goes totally kaput and I have a...

My solar production crashed! What happened?

New Powerwall Advanced Options [Toggles for charging from and discharging to grid from powerwalls]

Right, but what if you are producing enough solar that you never need to need to take more power than you give? If I export 1000kwh but only import 950kwh what difference does it make how much credit I have? If I export at a higher rate than I import I don't get to pocket the difference. In...

New Powerwall Advanced Options [Toggles for charging from and discharging to grid from powerwalls]

What if you could zero your electric bill in self powered mode simply by exporting excess solar power? Wouldn't that actually result in fewer charge/discharge cycles? And with less headache, just set it and forget it. But with arbitrage you are forcing the batteries to discharge/charge every day...

New Powerwall Advanced Options [Toggles for charging from and discharging to grid from powerwalls]

Are you guys saying that if I can't get Tesla to turn the setting on in the app, that I can still turn it on but I just won't see it turned on in the app?

New Powerwall Advanced Options [Toggles for charging from and discharging to grid from powerwalls]

No, that's why I was asking. But @Red_DS is with LADWP and has the option so I am going to call on Monday and see if I can get it enabled. It might be easier said than done because just getting them to enable "permission to export" after I got PTO was a challenge, and that one is obvious.

New Powerwall Advanced Options [Toggles for charging from and discharging to grid from powerwalls]

I'm on NEM 2 but TOU is not required with LADWP. Based on my production/usage pre-PTO I'm not convinced switching to TOU will be advantageous for me without some interesting combination of grid charging and PW exporting. Lots of homework for me to do, but first need to figure out if I am allowed...

I apologize if this has been answered but this megathread is just too long to completely digest. I did get through about ten pages though! PTO happened crazy fast

Thanks for all that. Sounds like it's not a simple as I thought and I've got some research to do. But regardless of what settings I have in the app, after Tesla makes the change to allow exports, they will automatically happen when I am overproducing, correct? I don't have to do anything to...

    PTO happened crazy fast

Mine is already on, but I can't send excess power to the grid which is the main benefit of PTO for me. What's the process for making that happen? How do I get my app to accurately reflect the power I send upstream and then apply that against my usage when I use it? And how do I get my system...

    PTO happened crazy fast

I don't know how big of a topic PTO is these days but I remember a time when many threads were about PTO delays (or maybe that was on Reddit, I don't recall). Anyway, I'm in Los Angeles with LADWP and it took one week. So it can theoretically be that fast. Back story is that I was holding back...

    Are curved roof tiles normal?

Are you saying my curve is mild based on the first photo or the second one? I don't think the first one is mild at all. I probably shouldn't have included the second photo since it looks more mild there because I couldn't hold the level perfectly straight in the center of the tile. But if you...

    Are curved roof tiles normal?

Upon the completion of my solar roof installation, I wasn't completely happy with the way it looked. My tiles weren't perfectly flat across my roof. I was told that the undulations were due to my house and its structure not being straight. This was even though they installed new plywood before...

Does solar roof cause massive data interference?

I tried with two different toners. I also tried with a network cable not connected to anything and it worked on that, I didn't even need to go into the yard. It's just occurring with the wires running through my walls/ceiling.

Does solar roof cause massive data interference?

I have a ton of low voltage wiring throughout my house and much of it is still un-traced and unlabeled. I have always been able to use toners to trace wires as I needed to use them. But this week I tried to trace some wires and it was impossible. Even when I put the probe a few inches down from...

How is Tesla support and service post-PTO?

Thank you for sharing your experience. At one point Tesla suggested that they would reimburse me for the cost of repairs. My response was that THEY needed to arrange for the repairs since my time is valuable and I don't think they are going to reimburse me for the time I'll need to find someone...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

I think I'm getting the gist of all this so I hope these are my last noob questions. How long between inspection and PTO? [various areas]

This thread seems chock full of horror stories, which is kind of the point of this thread. So I'm wondering if these are anomalies or if this is what everyone should expect? Discussion: Tesla Energy / Auto Customer Service

I was advised to ask a question from another thread here. Sounds like there are a lot of complaints about customer service here, which I guess is the point of this entire thread. How is Tesla support and service post-PTO?

My question isn't about how long it will take to get PTO after I pay (although I do care about this so thanks for the link). My question is how responsive is Tesla to fixing issues after you've paid in full. I guess you can take PTO out of the equation, that first post was TMI and all the PTO...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

The peak out? Not following you, out to where? It does seem impressive, but why is this such an outlier? I added another day's data to the post above, for comparison. Seems like on this second day I should have been able to produce more than I did on the first day because there was nothing...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

100% true. I just posted my drawings above. Lucky for me all my tiles are pointing in the same direction and have the same pitch so I have fewer variables than most. I passed final inspection and got the OK from the electric company for PTO. But Tesla will not turn on PTO without payment...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

Scrolling through my app history, I found a day where I had 11 KW power production. It is an outlier. What does this circled number mean? I have another thread going where I'm trying to figure out if there are any production issues with my system, and it seems like that's going to be harder to figure out than I thought. Meanwhile, Tesla has been bugging me to pay and get my PTO. I want PTO so I can start sending power to the grid...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

This is from an email last week. "Your solar system does not yet have permission to operate or be fully activated, the solar system will not produce the 11 KW until we receive permission to operate from the utility company." According to that, they are throttling me and it has nothing to do...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

I am learning that peak production is not such an important variable. But before I knew this, when I complained to Tesla that my peak production was not as high as I expected, they told me that it was because I didn't have PTO and that after PTO my peak production would go up. As irrelevant as...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

The truly pressing question is if there is any truth to Tesla telling me that my peak production will increase after PTO? It makes sense that my production is capped if my batteries are at 100% (I have one PW and two PW+) because I can't export. But if my batteries are at 50% is it possible that...

Solar roof production before PTO vs after PTO

I *was* basing this on what the Tesla employee who was here at my inspection told me a few weeks ago. He said that I should be able to generate 11.3 kW. But perhaps this was wrong. Looking at a previous email exchange with Tesla I found this "we installed 158 SR tiles at 72 watts a tile, 158 x...
