Burning plastic smell outside car after driving

Because they were no longer in the garbage :-) There was some other loose trash around which makes me think a critter ripped open a bag and the garbage collectors picked up most but not all of it. We have a lot of raccoons, who would absolutely tear into a bag and toss the nasty mothballs aside...

Burning Smell from Outside, Model Y parked outside not charging.

It turns out the smell was not from the car. There were some mothballs scattered at the entrance to our alley. We drove through them just before entering the garage. I guess we did not recognize the smell in context, especially when mixed with warm tire smell.

Burning plastic smell outside car after driving

... And we found it. This is funny. Turns out there were a few mothballs scattered at the entrance to our alley. More than one had been crushed, and we've had some wet weather to spread the smell around. We didn't recognize the smell out of context. I think some people believe that moth balls...

Burning plastic smell outside car after driving

We've had a weird development. My wife took my car (ICE) out last night, to avoid driving the ModS until we figured out the issue. It came home with a similar smell. So now we are scouring the neighborhood to see if there is some sort of chemical or fuel spill that we are driving through.

Burning Smell from Outside, Model Y parked outside not charging.

Was there a resolution to this? I'm having a similar issue with our 2023 Mod S. It smells like burning plastic _outside_ the car after a drive. It dissipates a little while after. We originally noticed it in our garage after parking the car. It went away after we aired out the garage, but it is...

Burning plastic smell outside car after driving

Our 2023 Model S has recently started giving off a fairly strong burning plastic smell after driving. The smell seems to be coming from outside the car. We notice mainly after parking in the garage. After it sits a while, the smell seems to dissipate. There's no visible smoke. We recently had...

    Loan Payment Details

I spoke to US Bank on the phone, and they helped me get the account setup on their web site. I had a previous paid-off loan with them, which effectively meant I had a previous _closed_ account with them that was confusing the web site. Then I got a letter from them via snail mail with all the...

    FSD Beta v11.x

By my "neighborhood", I mean a Dallas suburb. But I drive all over the DFW area. Yes, I see a few people behave like those in the video, but most don't. Rolling stops, as in almost-but-not-quite, are the norm. People blazing through without slowing down at all or just slightly tapping the brake...

    FSD Beta v11.x

Wow, I think 80% of those people would get ticketed in my neighborhood if there was a cop present. More were in the "running a stop sign" category than the "rolling stop" category.

    FSD Beta v11.x

I think lots of people would use it if it actually worked. I have a tight garage where there's not much room to open the door; it would be great to be able to summon out of it and even better to summon into it.

    FSD Beta v11.x

I can sort of see the tailgating decision, since I assume it doesn't need to account for human response time in its following distance. OTOH, I agree they need to factor the comfort of other drivers in that equation. But I think passing that close to a pedestrian in a crosswalk (close enough to...

    FSD Beta v11.x

From the "other companies can screw this up, too" department: I had a Cruise taxi almost hit me last week in downtown San Francisco. It was shortly before 10 pm. Intersection of Mason and O'Farrel. I was most of the way across Mason with an active walk signal when the Cruise came eastbound on...

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

To be clear, they did not r/r the same glass. They installed new glass. Which was a pain because I had already had it tinted before we noticed the problem. When I later complained that they had not touched up the frame scratches after fixing the rubbing problem, they were going to remove the...

    Overheat Protection

We've run into a sort of funny issue with overheat protection during this heat wave. It's been getting over 100F in our garage. So the ModS turns on overheat protection in the enclosed space and makes the garage even hotter. This goes well into the evening. When we figured out what was going on...

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

In my case, Tesla Service tried and failed to fix things with a non-intrusive adjustment, and eventually replaced the glass. They claimed the glass itself was installed to high on the liftgate. But each alignment situation is probably unique.

    FSD Beta v11.x

This is only loosely related, but my 2021 BMW m240 Nav system on rare occasions switches "left" and "right" when giving the final voice prompt before a maneuver, even though the preparatory prompts were correct. It's rare enough I thought it was my imagination, but I recently confirmed it is...

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

My wife has the car out right now, but I can tell you the left-right alignment is still about the same. Maybe a tiny bit better. The height is generally better, although it is high towards the back on the right side. (It was formerly low on the right). I'm wondering if that is a bump-stop...

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

So we took it to the Dallas SC. They agreed there was a problem, but getting it fixed has been a bit of a saga. The initial attempt to adjust was "unsuccessful". They said they had to replace the back glass, and made another appointment. We took it back on April 25th, and just got it back today...

    TXU Free EV Miles plan

Following up again--shortly after speaking with a person at Rolling Energy Resources, TXU showed that my car is connected. On the downside, I also got the first TXU bill. They charged the full $9.95 base fee for a partial month (2 week) billing period. Sigh.
  21. R

    TXU Free EV Miles plan

I saw that. The base and kWH charges are lower than I had on the GME renewable plan I am coming from. I'm on the 24 month version, which is 14.5¢ per kWH before TDU charges but has the same base charge. The 1000 kWH all-in average is 15.6¢. The plan is cheaper than what I was paying before even...

    TXU Free EV Miles plan

Just to follow up on my on thread--I did find a phone number on the Rolling Energy Resources web site and talked to a human. They say they had a weeklong glitch in their connection to TXU, and that problem should be resolved next week. I am given them the benefit of the doubt that that will...

    TXU Free EV Miles plan

Has anyone successfully signed up for TXU's Free EV Miles 24 plan? The plan alledgedly gives free off-peak charging, and has fairly generous off-peak times. I signed up for the plan, and got a link to register my car with "rollingenergyresources.com". I tried to do that, but TXU doesn't think...

    2023 Model S - FasTrak Toll Tag

We put the TollTag for our 2023 to the right of the mirror, as recommended by the TollTag people. It seems to be working so far. It opened the gate at DFW airport last week, which is a good test because those gates are finicky and do not have a license-plate camera fallback.
  25. R

    2023 Model S - FasTrak Toll Tag

Did you try it in by the mirror in your 2023, and does it work? I have the same dilemma, and the instructions for the toll tag in our area also say to mount it to the right of the mirror.

    Override charging schedule

I'm sure this is a FAQ, but I have failed to find the answer: Is there an easy way to override a charging schedule without deleting it? I have charging set for when my off-peack discount kicks it. What happens if I get home later than that and plug in after the scheduled start? Am I correct it...

    Apple Music Improvements

I’ve read that 2023.6.8 made “undocumented” improvements to Apple Music. Has anyone noticed anything? I’d love to see higher bit rates, but I would be happy just to have it stop skipping songs.

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

I just noticed in my own pics that the glass is also misaligned. This time to the left, probably in an attempt to make the glass line up even though the liftgate is misaligned. So I think I'm best off taking it to the SC in hopes they will actually remove and reinstall the glass in the process...

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

Now that you made me look again, I think maybe the same guy installed my liftgate as yours. And on closer inspection, I see the rubbing part is slightly to the right of center.
  31. R

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

Here are the pictures I already have. The alignment doesn't look uneven per se. It rubs in the center, so it's as if the whole liftgate is positioned too far forward. You can sort of see the scratched paint in the open picture (point of the arrow) and you can see the white residue in all the...

I was afraid of that. I just had it tinted :)

    Liftgate Glass Rubbing

The leading edge of the liftgate glass on our 2023 model S seems to intermittently rub against metal when the liftgate is opened to full height. Has anyone else experienced this? We didn't notice this until after we had the windows tinted--is it likely the tinting process affected the liftgate...

I don't understand how NoA is supposed to work

To be clear, this appears to something beyond the "hand-on-wheel" test. It makes me enter a non-trivial steering input. well beyond the torque needed to avoid the nags while lane-keeping. In all the cases I noticed, I had had hands on steering wheel for several minutes prior to the lane change...

I don't understand how NoA is supposed to work

One other thing that makes this confusing on the Mod S is knowing where the car expects me to look for information. the central display tells me a lane change is coming up, the instrument display shows where it wants to change and surrounding traffic, and a text message on the bottom of the...

I don't understand how NoA is supposed to work

I don't think it's just checking that my hands are on the wheel before the change. It seems to be asking for permission. It seems to want considerably more torque than the normal hands-on-wheel check, and in the direction of the change. At least, I assume that it knows my hands are on the wheel...

I don't understand how NoA is supposed to work

I guess my confusion is around the fact that there is a "require confirmation" option that I turned off, but it still requires confirmation. Just a different kind of confirmation.

I don't understand how NoA is supposed to work

We have a 2023 Model S. We bought EAP, but not FSD. It's on 2023.2.12 I've tried playing around Navigate on Autopilot, and I don't think I understand how it is supposed to work. I've got "require confirmation for lane changes" turned off. When the car wants to changes, sometimes it just does...

    Poor Customer Service

Glad to hear that--that is what an expensive car service experience should be like. We were told they Plano, TX SC does not have loan cars. They will message you with Uber codes, but only if they keep your car overnight.

    Poor Customer Service

Very true. I've had cars from Honda, Acura, Mazda, and BMW. They all had their ups and downs. I've had dealerships take care of me and dealerships actively try to scam me. But none like this. OTOH, I've had tech companies behave very much like this, so I guess it fits Tesla's image of a tech...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

If we are talking about competitor's competence in driving assistance features: Our 2020 BMW M340i has phantom swerving issues. It's not common, but when it does happen one definitely needs fresh underwear. On a trip from Austin to Dallas recently, it freaked out over a shadow in the road and...

How long does it take to opt in to FSD beta on a new vehicle?

IIUC, all those things are now in the EAP. When we ordered our Model S, the only things listed in FSD that were not in EAP were "Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control" and "Autosteer on city streets (Coming soon)".

    FSD Beta v11.x

I have no hypotheses. My point was that the statistic as described is not sensitive to the signal of a change in the number of minor crashes. Not that I think there would be more. Or less for that matter. I can speculate either way, but cannot prove it one way or the other from the statistic...
  46. R

    FSD Beta v11.x

I didn't say that. I said that _if_ there was an increase of minor crashes, it would not show up in the statistic. I have hopes that that is not the case--but even if it is, in my opinion a reduction in major crashes would outweigh it.
  47. R

    FSD Beta v11.x

The Tesla tweet on this talks about "airbags-deployed" crashes, which could filter out a lot of minor collisions. FSDb-assisted drivers could have more fender-benders than unaided-drivers without impacting that statistic. But even so, a reduction of serious crashes seems like a win.
  48. R

    FSD Beta v11.x

Sure, but as long as FSDb is L2, the driver is part of the system. It might make more sense to say "Drivers using Tesla FSDb" drive more miles per collision than unassisted drivers.
  49. R

    Poor Customer Service

Update: The SC in fact did not cancel this time. We took the car in today and the problems are resolved to our satisfaction. The process could have been easier, but they eventually got it done.

    Yet another "in spec" question

We have the car back. It's not "perfect", but believably "in spec", in the sense that, had it been like it is now at delivery, we probably wouldn't have noticed.
