SF to Toronto (7/30) and back (8/30)

It was nice to read these posts since my trip in late 2022. I have since flown back and forth between TO and SF but remember my drive with fond memories. My Model S (P85D) is a lot older with 281K KM on its original battery. Back in 2022, I drove on winter tires and I was wondering if that...

SF to Toronto (7/30) and back (8/30)

Awesome (and inspiring). I am planning a Toronto to San Francisco return trip starting next week! I couldn't figure out the total number of days that this trip took including overnight stays. Also was the trip done solo or with a partner?

Warranty Adjustment Program – Touchscreen Component email - Wow - watch for it

In my situation, I asked that the SC send me a copy of the invoice when I sent my car in for a dead MCU last year. They said they have to have IT look into it because they are unable to print or email me that invoice. If they disallow my reimbursement, I wonder what excuse they will give me?

Warranty Adjustment Program – Touchscreen Component email - Wow - watch for it

I had my MCU replaced due to the eMMC issue last Feb/2020. However Tesla says I am not eligible for refund. I can't even "Submit" my form so that they can give me an explanation as to why. Not the most pleasant experience to address this.

    Home Charging cost Ontario

Interesting topic - I too have compared the gas consumption of my ICE vehicles to my MS and I have estimated a 4:1 cost ratio (gas:electricity). That excludes my road trips where I use the free SC. If I included SC trips, I probably would be experiencing a 5:1 cost benefit. My rates are based...

Autopilot on GTA Highways (401/404/DVP) - Worth it?

Easily 2 - 2.5 hours. The nominal segment between SC on a long trip. I have driven 12 hours but that obviously included stops for restroom and charging.

Autopilot on GTA Highways (401/404/DVP) - Worth it?

I agree with many of the recent comments here. If I am in control, I tend to drive 10 - 15% faster than the flow. If AP1 is driving, we tend to be going at the flow of traffic or maybe 3-5% slower. In the end, one might also factor in the speeding ticket fines that I have avoided by not...

how come no one talks about gas anxiety?

And while it's rare, let's not say gas anxiety doesn't exist. Just this morning, my son stayed home from university to make a chiropractor appointment and it got cancelled on him because the doctor ran out of gas on the way to the office. I thought that was amusing though wasteful of my time...

How often should we charge to 100%?

I've seen some videos that show most cell balancing already starts to occur at around 92% SOC. So in my case, I have never gone over 92% and I never needed to have more range for the next day's driving (supercharging for long trips not withstanding).

how come no one talks about gas anxiety?

I can honestly say I have experienced gas range anxiety two times in the last 2 years and sure they are 100% self-induced but they were real anxieties that I wish I planned around: 1) Driving all night from Kentucky to Canada, we were faced with trying unsuccessfully gas station after gas...

how come no one talks about gas anxiety?

To be fair - I think this IS a real topic. Not about gas range anxiety, but the topic about range anxiety in general. Talking with anyone about EV (if you are not an owner), this concept is always top-of-mind. Sometimes it is hard to convince the non-adopter because they have not considered...

    Personal safety while charging

Some thoughts after reading all this interest material so far: 1) Know the exact SC address and have it handy so that when you call for help, you can state exactly where you are 2) I would lock my car in Valet mode in case I get carjacked. This would put my car into a less-performing mode and...

    Radar alerts

I am a subscriber. It uses the same database that keeps the Waze info. Problem is that it is down right now (I will write to the tech support). The car position and police locations are not displayed since the last update. This seems to be the same problem afflicting other Waze web pages...

Have your watts per mile dropped due to service/update lately?

The nominal capacity graphs are an average. If you look at the scatter plots, you will see some people endure worse performance (even on mile 1) while some enjoy better performance. You seem to be on the lucky side of the bell distribution. I have also noticed some batteries do get better...

Have your watts per mile dropped due to service/update lately?

Interesting - perhaps the brake recall addressed some seized calipers! That would affect your consumption figures. Also could they have pumped up your tires with more air?

    Sudbury here we come

I am surprised you had to do those Range Charge on a 90 KWH battery. I have a P85D and I only hit 90% max on any session. Mind you, it could have been much colder for you, more passengers, etc, etc. Did you feel at any point that you were pushing the range based on the consumption trend? I...

Bike Racks or Hitch Rack/System Ideas for MS

I agree that the rating is pretty low but I wouldn't push it. My Cayenne's tongue weight rating is 600lbs so it is a true class 2 hitch. The Torklift is a lightweight but very convenient. If I could figure a way to reinforce it, I would but I don't think that's realistic if the weak part of...

    Sudbury here we come

I think overall, it was a great experience - especially looking back at it now of course. Nobody got hurt, no one got stranded or had to ride the "tow of shame". The simultaneous 5 car jolt was probably a very rare event. The high inrush current as the charging ramps up is probably higher...

    Eastern Canada Superchargers

By the way, 5 of us were at the Huntsville SC last night and we managed to blow the main circuit breaker (or at least that's what we thought happened). The stations were all empty and 5 cars plugged in all within a minute of eachother. We plugged in together at other places with no issues but...

How do you pass time at the charging stations?

If the weather is nice out - I take my Onewheel out of the frunk and check out the area. I saw someone at the Parry Sound SC do something similar using a foldable scooter - like minds think alike. Sometimes, I just take the pillow out (again from the frunk) and have a nice snooze in the back.

Winter - excessive battery range reduction...

While I don't experience a 50% reduction in my winter driving (more like 20 - 30%), that still relates to 2x or more efficiency than an ICE. In summer, it is 4x more efficient than gas. Sure the range is shortened - one of the cons of EV. An ICE is by its design a thermo-dynamic process so...

    Eastern Canada Superchargers

Sorry - meant the Yonge & Shep location. I went to the Lawrence location - I was 4th in line. Had to wait 30 minutes before I could find a spot. That place is only running 6 of the 8 stalls - for Toronto and all the Tesla's sold there, that's a huge deficiency soon to be addressed.

    Eastern Canada Superchargers

I wish these new Toronto Superchargers will go online already. I have to go from Oakville, to North York, then Waterloo. On a full charge, I can just make the round trip according to evtripplanner.com but it sure would be nice to have a charging location along the way. In fact I will drive...

Have you been uncorked? Post your impressions!

From what I recall comparing the P from the non P cars was that the rear motor (or drive unit) was bigger on the P cars. Uncorking a car usually means allowing a higher upper limit of current to flow through the system. The motor hasn't changed. Typically the bigger motors are designed to...

    Cold Weather Driving

Last year was a pretty mild winter in Toronto but whenever we did have any sizable amount of snow, I didn't have any issues with those tires on any of the cars. I am not sure what all the complaints were about. The combination of the software pliable winter tires aggressive treads. all-wheel...

It works. Used a Tesla wall charger to charge the smart car today.

Glad it works and everyone is happy. Your Smartcar probably has a much smaller battery and charging is more critical for you. The Tesla's have a much bigger battery and so long as no one is sitting idle (ie completed their charge but still connected), then this is a good use of resources. I...

    Tesla moments

I get Tesla Moments all the time but this one yesterday really concerned me. My wife and I are driving to the city on our busy 4 - lane highway. Tesla moments

Exact same thing happened to me on the weekend. it was a bit unnerving because I didn't know what was the matter. Was somehting hanging out of my car? Was I dragging a body on the ground? All they wanted to do was to make sure I was looking at them (no problem since I had AP on) and that...

    Eastern Canada Superchargers

I guess this is one of the problems with long distance driving with Superchargers - the load can get very lumpy as groups of drivers reach the Superchargers at the same time. I have never had to wait at any SC so far but perhaps it is because of my fortunate timing. The next time I have to...

    Used P85D or new 70D?

I tried a MS75 and it was quite good considering I have a P85D. The P85D is still faster and the suspension on my model is not bad. With regards to handling, I also have an early Acura NSX and that model handles. It is a lighter car (slower) but way more agile. You will find that all MS' are...

Advice please: TST 20" or Axis MS 20"

    Tesla moments

Once in awhile (particularly after a long road trip), I stop by a gas station and park right by an empty pump - to reach for the squeegee and clear the bugs off my windscreen. Then I drive off of course - much to the confusion of the people starring at me with their fossil cars!

What do you usually do when your Tesla is charging?

On SC visits on long trips, I do any of the following: 1) Sleep 2) Potty break 3) Eat 4) More recently, I pull out my Onewheel out of the frunk and explore the neighborhood! I saw someone do something similar - he pulled out a fold-up scooter from his frunk. My wife was looking at me shaking...

AutoPilot instructions? How do I turn it on/start using it

Hey, I wonder if Greg R ever bought that option and if so, does he regret or appreciate the option. I had it on my P85D since day 1 and I love it. I use it every day on my commute to work and 90% on any long trips. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that option again. Now as for the AP1 vs AP2...

Lower Charging Rate\Battery Longevity vs Efficiency

After reading these threads and looked at the arguments, I have moved from slow-charging (15A) to just charging at 30A. I can go to 40A but I did notice my cut-off switch got a lot of carbon and hence stopped working when I was charging constantly at 40A. I used a Dremel tool to brush off the...

    wow..good reactions

In Toronto on the 403, the stopped traffic is easily 10 - 15 km long! It is that bad. There is no left lane other than the paved shoulder that is often filled with debris (that could cause a tire puncture) or filled by police stopping people who "cheat" by illegally driving on the HOV lane...

    wow..good reactions

I love AutoPilot but I don't lose my concentration. I use the HOV lane (car pool lane for those in the States) and I am driving at or near the speed limit whereas the lane directly to my right is stop and go. Almost 3x/week there is someone who isn't looking that comes over to my lane. Most...

Lower Charging Rate\Battery Longevity vs Efficiency

Interesting topic. In the winter time (where it is around freezing), I have always timed my charge at about 35 - 40A (40A is my HPWC max rate), so that it is finished just before I head off in the morning. In the summer time, I tried to stretch out my charging at 15 - 20 A thinking that my...

A few quick thoughts after my first short (900 mile) road trip with my Model S

I did a long drive with my ICE vehicle from Toronto to Atlantic City (there and back in two days). I used the ICE because my wife was too nervous and felt we would be wasting too much time charging. I insisted that the following week, I wanted to take the MS on the same trip to pick her up and...

    Question on Regenerative braking

I thought about this topic on a recent long-distance drive. What about changing the regen setting to the lighter mode when highway cruising? The feathering effect going from acceleration to coast to deceleration is more tolerant and perhaps that may result in slightly more efficiency. I have...

Rear ended today at a stop light by a stupid driver

Been there...done that. Such a pain in the a$$ to deal with and it takes forever to repair. I always keep one eye behind me when I come to a stop. On the highways, if I come to a sudden decrease in speed, I turn on my 4-way hazards momentarily - just to get noticed. Then I pray the driver is...
