California Utilities Plan All Out War On Solar, Please Read And Help

Don't get me wrong. I'm on your side of the argument. But one thing you say here I don't quite understand. Net metering requires a residence with solar to frequently tap the grid for energy, even if the residence generates more energy throughout the year than they use. When they use that...

Model Y Perf or BMW X3M?

As some here have said, the performance of the BMW pales in comparison to the acceleration and smoothness of the Tesla YP driving experience, even if the Y has inferior specs, but I don't think it does. No real comparison once you drive it. I have a Model 3 LR. Before that, I had five different...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

UPDATE: When I charged my car a few days ago, I took temperature readings on the 4 big red and black wires before and after the charging session. The back black wire was the one that fried previously. The session lasted a little over 3 hours. Everything is working fine. Just wanted to look...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

Haha. I am OCD and that's exactly what I planned on doing. Read everything before charging and then read everything immediately after charging...and the breaker will be flipped when I do it. I will probably do this every 2 weeks and stretch out the time to every month. etc. if things look OK...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

FYI I did buy a temperature gun and will monitor the temperature every few weeks. First time will be tomorrow right after I charge for about 3 hours. I’ll post if anything seems strange.

More TSBs out there than I thought for my car

They replaced my pins too. I asked the guy why they were doing it for all M3s. He said because the pin problem, if it happens, causes the car to not be able to get charged at all. That caused a lot of service calls of a priority one nature because you couldn't drive the car once the current...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

UPDATE: My electrician came out Wednesday to fix the issue. He looked at it and determined it was definitely heat that caused the wire to fry, but wasn't sure why it happened. Checked the connections and they were good. Everything looked fine except the melted wire. Breaker is proper and fine...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

UPDATE: Got the Torx security drill bit from Amazon today, so was finally able to open up the wall connector to see if I could find anything that looked wrong. Yikes! The insulation around the main black wire is flaking right off and showing some bare wire. Heat, I'm sure, caused this. If you...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

Thanks for the other thread links. Seems like a lot of people have the same issues. Seems most is with the gen 3 but also gen 1 and 2 as well. I was concerned that mine going out after two years of no issues would be unique, but apparently it’s not.

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

I'm testing the charging with my friend's MS right now to see if it's the car or the wall connector/charger. If it's the charger, I will open it up and check for loose connections before contacting the electrician. Thanks

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

UPDATE: This morning I started charging the M3 and monitored it via the app about every 3-5 minutes. It started out fine at 48 amps and 44-45 miles of range per hour. It dropped down to 24 amps at about the 55 minute mark. At that point, I looked at the display and there was a message...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

OK. Got it. A thermal problem does make sense. I don't think it's a weather heat problem cuz it's not that hot here right now and it's been plenty hot many times before with no problem. Next time I have a chance to monitor the charging better, I will see if the wall connector or anything else...

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

But when it's dropped to 24a, and I unplug, wait about 10 seconds, and plug back in, it goes back to 48a for at least 20 minutes and all looks fine. It seems if something got too hot, it would stay too hot over a period of less than 20 seconds and it thus would stay at 24a, or would quickly...

No, I don't have a scheduled departure time.

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

I think it's the wall charger or electrical feed as well. What's perplexing to me is that it starts out at 48a and then eventually (after at least 20 minutes in both my cases tested), it drops down. And if I restart, it immediately goes back to 48a.

Home charging now stepping down to 24 amps during the charging session

My M3 (rear wheel long range) will be two years old next month (August). When I charge it, exclusively starting at midnight due to rates, and using a Tesla wall connector, I receive a text when charging starts and when it ends along with the mile range when it starts and finishes. The first...

Walk away lock "Exclude Home" distance

I set the option to Exclude Home, but it still locked while in my garage. When I went to look at the option again, it was mysteriously unchecked, so I checked it again. Same thing has happened three times now. I check it, still locks in garage, look at check box and it's unchecked, so I check...

Scrapped up rocker panel - alternative ways to repair?

Wow. Interesting. There's one over an hour from me in Pomona, CA. Are these places different from a Tesla service center. Bacause I found a Tesla Pomona service center thinking that was it, but after making the appt. they cancelled it saying they didn't do body repair. I found a Tesla Pomona...

Scrapped up rocker panel - alternative ways to repair?

I scraped up my passenger side rocker panel running up against roof tiles that the solar installers pulled from the side of my garage to replace broken tiles during their install and I didn't see them pulling into the garage. Estimate to repair is $2,300. $30 of parts. All the rest is labor cuz...

    What's the best TOU plan w/SDG&E w/solar on house & M3

Thanks for the advice. Kinda forgot about the super off peak going til 2 PM on weekends and holidays. Didn't know about the 10 AM - 2 PM thing during March and April. When I look at the TOU plans here: Time of Use (TOU) | San Diego Gas & Electric I don't see anything that defines what peak, off...

    What's the best TOU plan w/SDG&E w/solar on house & M3

It’s an 8.75 kW system. Electric generation is estimated at 13,613 kWh. My trailing 12 previous months usage was 11,729. Twenty-five 350 kW panels. We will probably use more electric because we will use AC more than before solar. But on the other side, 30% - 40% of the usage is charging the EV...

    What's the best TOU plan w/SDG&E w/solar on house & M3

I have AC as well as solar and the EV. What you say here confirms exactly what I have been thinking, so that makes me feel good. I'm guessing I will be a net seller because if I extrapolate out the last 6 days left in my current (and first full month of net metering) billing period, I should...

    What's the best TOU plan w/SDG&E w/solar on house & M3

I have an M3 that I charge exclusively at home. Just got solar for my house a few months ago. My electricity provider is SDG&E. Currently I am on the EV-TOU-5 electric plan.It was the best plan for me before I got the solar because, even though there is a $16 monthly service charge on that plan...

Slacker doesn't play on demand music after V10

Before V10, when I used a voice command such as "Play Tiny Dancer by Elton John", it would then play that song without any more intervention on my part. Now what it does is bring up the keyboard and behind that is a list of artists and albums that "match" that. Even then, there's no easy way to...

    BMW’s new key

I agree. I had 5 BMWs before getting my current M3. The last being a 2014 435i. The BMW Connected Drive app is absolutely horrible. I’m the type that goes out of their way to use technology. I gave up on it.

    2019.20.4.2

I got 4.2 Monday night. Can't remember what I had before that, either 2.1 or 4.1, but I think 4.1 because I was last updated just 2 days before getting 4.2. Anyway, not sure if these were any of the supposed critical updates that needed to be fixed, but the previous release introduced windshield...

Fastrak Toll Road Stickers Working With M3 Windshield?

I got a new FasTrak toll roads (California) sticker for my M3 in the mail. It's not a plastic thing that velcros onto your windshield. It's the small sticker (2.5" x .75") that is meant to stick onto your windshield. Was wondering if this will work on the M3 windshield. I know Fastrak mentions...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

LAST UPDATE: Took my car in Thursday, May 2nd to the SC for the scheduled replacement of the windshield. First time at an SC, so was a little freaked when I saw at least 20 cars in front of mine just sitting there and more around the corner I couldn't see. But when I checked in, the guy said it...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

UPDATE #3 All Star Glass, who I believe is a pretty large nationwide outfit, now tells me that they got a quote from Tesla on the parts and have submitted the estimate to my insurance company for approval. Once they get that, they will order the parts. But they don't have my trust for several...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

UPDATE #2: Well, that didn't take long. Safelite called me back 2 hours after confirming my appt. for Monday of next week and told me that they can't get the glass. Therefore, they canceled my appointment and told me I needed to go directly to Tesla. Not that they can't get the glass in time...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

Read my post I just posted right after yours. In a nutshell, they said they can get the glass, but it will take a week. They also assured me that once they are done, there will be no need to take it to Tesla for anything else. They can do it all including alignment/calibrations. The Irvine...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

UPDATE: I called my local Tesla SC in Costa Mesa, CA this morning. I was told that I needed to use the app to make an appt. Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

I just made an appointment w/Safelite to replace my windshield. I was going to ask about the camera and they brought it up before I even asked. They said it needs to be "expertly aligned" as opposed to "calibrated" but maybe that's the same thing? They said they have the capability to do that...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

Thanks for all your responses. Based on all of them, when I call Tesla Monday and get a price, including any possible recalibration, if I can’t get my insurance company (Nationwide), to pay for the whole thing, I will have Safelite do it. That’s who my insurance company recommends, and in fact...

Cracked windshield: should Tesla, Safelite or fix it?

Rock flew up today and put a 15" crack across my windshield. Called insurance and they will cover the whole thing. I told them I wanted Tesla to do it because with the autopilot (appears they will need to re-calibrate it anyway), a camera, rain sensors, etc., I'm not sure I trust someone else...

LR RWD to receive firmware upgrade to 325 miles...actual capacity bump??

Manual v Auto transmission (out of MA)

The M3 is the first non-manual transmission car I have owned since I was 17. I'm 61 now, so that's a LOT of years, cars (nine as far as I can remember) and a testament to how much I like a manual transmission and everything that goes with it. With that said, I am thrilled with the M3 and would...

NEMA 14-50 plug or wall charger?

I just put in an order for the M3 LR RWD and am now trying to figure out which charging option to go with in my garage. I was starting to lean towards the 14-50 plug since it's cheaper than the wall charger and almost as high on charge miles per hour. But then I ran across the fact that the...
