Random thought on FSD accident rates

Would be interesting to see the graph of accidents per mile vs percentage of miles driven on FSD (and/or FSD beta)...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

The above inspired me to put it this way: When it is said that accidents rate is lower on FSD you need to understand it as "Human driver plus FSD have lower accidents rates than human driver plus whatever hodge-podge of driver assist features is present in all cars". BTW lower FSD accident...

The Major Problem With FSD That Tesla Won’t Acknlowledge

I guess I needed to quote more... You have completely missed the point of my remark - the original post was regarding the insurance and not the sales. So let me rephrase that: as long as improving FSD reduces the cost of your insurance business more than the expense of said improving there's an...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

I'm only pointing out the psychological effects of the too frequent phantom braking - they condition you to treat any braking where you do not see anything causing them as phantom braking instead of double checking. Here's an example. Some time ago when the phantom braking was happening more...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

That's the "where they do not already have it" qualifier. But in any case whatever tesla gets automatically is a snippet that we do not know how big it is. Additional information beyond that might be useful in some cases.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

I agree with this part. They indeed need to be asking for all available dashcam data where they do not already have it. It may not be available in all cases but that is besides the point. On the other hand there might be a few cases they have identified as important and would like to have...

The Major Problem With FSD That Tesla Won’t Acknlowledge

At some point there was a statistic related specifically to FSD and that would need to be worse than average to be on par with general population as it is specifically non-highway driving. Of course there are factors that are not being taken into account to fully analyze the situation but you...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

You are basically making my case but drawing different conclusion since you equate "looking" with "seeing". Let me rephrase that this way: the driver is looking but not seeing something could lead to a bad situation if he relies on that and overrides the system (properly reassessing situation...

The Major Problem With FSD That Tesla Won’t Acknlowledge

That's assuming it is cheaper than improving FSD. If, on the other hand, improving FSD will make more money the FSD will continue improving.

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

Well, English is my third language so I just double checked my understanding of the difference between word "reason" and "cause" and it does not look like I had misused them... In this case the reason for phantom braking would the flaw in the AI and the cause would be whatever triggered that AI...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

I had a case when on empty two lane highway the car slowed down (not phantom braking but an orderly slowdown), switched to the left lane, accelerated back to original speed, drove for a little bit in the left lane and switched lane back. Exactly like it does when coming up to a slower driving...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

:) If insertion of that word makes it easier to understand than let it be, but to me it is a tautology. An "invalid reason" would be a "cause" but not a "reason".

    Elon: FSD Beta tweets

What bugs me the most is the car complaining every few minutes about side cameras being obscured when it is just DARK due to driving on the empty road in the middle of nowhere without any other cars or street lights around to light up the sides of the road. Ok, you think you are blind and want...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

I mean with each phantom braking override you are becoming more and more likely to to override it right away instead of taking second look around before doing that during braking for a reason.
  17. A

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

It conditions you not to take a second look when apparent phantom braking occurs. Just take a look at people posting about their reactions around here... I'd rather let a phantom braking occur since the time needed to reassess the situation would not allow one to avoid said braking. Thankfully...

Has anyone heard of a Tesla being rear ended because of phantom braking?

That's the scary part. Frequent phantom braking conditions you to overriding it quickly and then what would happen during breaking for a reason?..

Unable to set up phone as key

Apparently there's a limit on the number of keys.. I was getting the same error as above and couldn't get it to work no matter the reinstall/re-pair/etc. But since I was messing with keys I noticed that I till had a few old phones set up as keys so I decided to remove them. As soon as I removed...

    FSD Beta 10.12

FCW 🤬 They really need to improve that detection if they are using it in safety score... It is bad enough when the car starts screaming at you for no reason but then it is even worse when it also affects your safety score... There's a stretch of the road where it would often freak out - divided...

Tesla FSD beta safety score reset

It is hard to predict if the opt out will result in the score reset. Couple of weeks I have opted in for the first time on a new car, drove it once and opted out. One day and a few drives later I still had Safety score in the app and after opting in again it continued to take into account the...

    Elon: FSD Beta tweets

Maybe I should have said "keep in mind" instead of "ignore" but it may not be as "far faster" as it may seem. I also didn't mean to imply that AI learns faster than human if that is your impression. But I wonder what the difference would be if the AI had the benefit of being on par in regard to...

    Elon: FSD Beta tweets

You ignore the fact that humans start with quite a few years learning how to interpret the physical world. AI does not have that background to start (general AI anyone?). Another thing that may be at play here is the difference in the complexity of the neural nets.

Back in 2021 I used to get this automated reply to my submissions but not anymore. Full regenerative braking doesn't ding by itself but it seems like it not very far from the limit and when it is combined with incline (going uphill) it could put it over the threshold. And it doesn't much of an incline... It took me some time to notice one of them when I was trying to figure...

I'm not sure if auto wipers will ever work. If it is a light rain/drizzle it is often that the upper part of the windshield doesn't get any rain due to it being blown away by the wind so the camera does not see any raindrops while the lower part is getting wetter and wetter until I can't see...

FSD Beta Attempts to Kill Me; Causes Accident

Yea, in US there's still no mandate for the side "barriers" on the semi trailers. That one much publicized underride death in the tesla might have been prevented had the "barrier" been installed on the trailer. Yet, all the noise was about Tesla and none of it about lack of the "barrier" even...

FSD Beta Attempts to Kill Me; Causes Accident

There are always trade offs. Chances are the resources spent on some of the above (1-3) will help the progress short term but impair it long term. The rest (3-6) are, probably, already being done by Tesla to the best of their abilities and your impression that they are not doing so is just your...

FSD Beta Attempts to Kill Me; Causes Accident

I have no problem taking over without any jerk. I, actually, put the steering setting on the 'sport' - otherwise it is way too easy to disengage without noticing it. This one I wholeheartedly agree. I wish there was an option you could set to have it disengage completely in this case. I've...

2016 FSD video: there was an accident with roadside barrier on Tesla property

2016 FSD video: there was an accident with roadside barrier on Tesla property

That's strange... For me it behaves similarly while on FSD beta or not. It controls them in both cases. I would say it is more often turns the brights off when unnecessary than the other way around. I.e. turning them off for the traffic signs, street lamps or lights around houses... That's the...

    10.6.1

I had it driving through rural VT/NY on 10.5. The highway passes through the settlements and the speed limit would change from 55 to 35 and then back to 55. For almost all changes from 55 to 35 the car would indicate updated target speed but continue at previous higher one also ignoring manual...

MASTER THREAD: FSD Subscription Available 16 Jul 2021

What I do on long trips is to rest one hand on the steering wheel and the weight of the hand is enough to keep the torque detection happy. Since I have not seen any replies to that effect... Yes, it will drive - I went to Canada over Thanksgiving weekend and it was working. As far as my impression: it did a little worse in Canada than in US probably due to difference in lane marking etc. For example, it didn't want to offer...

Tesla could make it work much better in geofenced areas if they would choose to. Even without that you could see Teslas doing the same routes as Waymo. Personally, I would be very unhappy if Tesla suddenly decides to start perfecting FSD in some geofenced areas.
