2020 model S being sold at Tesla now

I may have missed this change of policy but I always thought Tesla sold by calendar year. If you look at existing inventory ( and there is not much mind you) you will see a mix of 2019s and 2020s for sale depending on location. What gives? Is Teslas starting to emulate other manufacturers to stimulate year end sales? Any thoughts?

Many reports of this in the Model 3 forum. Seems this is the first year they’ve done it. Guess they figured they were leaving enough sales on the table to people clinging to the idea that “waiting for a ‘20” is going to have a substantial effect on their resale value, so they decided to capitulate.

One of the characters in the VIN reflects the "production year" (I believe the eighth from the right).

Or you could look at the registration. The model year is clearly stated.
