Tesla is perhaps the only vehicle manufacturer that does not release model years. The first 2020 model X will be built in January, 2020, and there will be virtually no difference between that model and the last one built in 2019.

In the past 'new' VINs have been seen a lot closer to the new year. Seems awful early. Want to give the first part of the VIN so we can confirm? The 'personal' part is the last six digits.

Practically, yes. But the VIN still has 'years' in it because they all have to. Let's see what we're dealing with here....

Digit t0 should be 'L' for 2020, unless something has changed.

Yes, Tesla is apparently doing Model Years now.

My Model S to be delivered in Chicago first week in November is a MY 2020 according to the VIN: 5YJSA1E29LFXXXXXX. The 10th digit is L.

They always have done years on the VIN, as was stated. What was meant is that they never advertised ‘here’s the new 2020 Model 3 with blah blah new features’. There aren’t model years as the other manufactures have them but they have them only because they legally have to have them (physically) for sales and insurance purposes.

Aware buyers usually ask for the Manufactured date...on the door sticker.

Model years for Tesla do not have the same meaning as for legacy manufacturers.

Right! And even the Model S 2016 refresh (front end) occurred mid-year.
