2020 Model X tripping GFCI...but not 2023 Model Y...

Baffling to me...but purchased a 2020 Model X for my wife and get home and it cannot charge using the mobile (5-15) but not issue charging my 2023 Model Y. The Model X instantly kicks GFCI, ive tried changing the settings on the app and in the car to no avail.

What is going on?

The mobile connector doesn’t actually do anything other than energize a relay to connect the car’s power electronics to the receptacle. It seems that each car’s power electronics and or software is slightly different. Before charging, the car sends a tiny bit of current to ground to test to see if there is a ground present. Older or out of spec GFCi receptacles will often trip during that test.

The solution is to replace the GFCI receptacle. For now, you can use a heavy duty extension cord and plug into a different circuit.
