500 miles in and battery shows 2% less miles when charged, normal?

The range will vary over time. It is an estimate based on driving habits and state of charge of the battery. State of charge of the battery is an estimate based on voltage/and or current flow to a sensor. So range is an estimate based on another estimate.

Personally I suggest people switch to percent charge and forget about the range estimate. After a few days you will treat it just like an old time gas gauge.

OMG why do people keep repeating this incorrect information? Rated range HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DRIVING HABITS. It’s the EPA rated range. Period. Full stop. Just as it has been the previous 1000 times this has been explained over the years. It’s based on a fixed Wh/mi. Yes state of charge is an estimate as it can’t be measured directly, and that estimate can be more or less accurate depending on how the battery has been charged and discharged lately, but it has nothing to do with your driving habits.

The range estimate isn't very accurate unless you've recently fully charged (to 100%) and discharged (to 10-20%) the battery. The general consensus is that charging the battery to >90% and letting it sit increases battery degradation, so a full charge/discharge shouldn't be done frequently. And it's best to drive the car immediately after it's done charging.
