I use a flat head eye glass screwdriver. The suction cup is probably safer but I already had the screwdriver and it gets in behind pretty clean. If it were to scratch anything it wouldn’t be in a visible area but no scratching so far.
In addition to all the other ways stated here to remove the center cap, I actually used a small ear cleaner (yes it was clean ewwww) which easily pops out the cap when placed into the groove along the side of the cap. (if you are Asian, you will know exactly what this is lol, but here is a photo)
Waste of perfectly good tape though. The suction cup costs less than $5. I put them on for long road trips and take them off otherwise. Well worth the cost.
