Airbag disabled when using seat cushion

My girlfriend likes to use a seat cushion on her car seat. As a passenger in my Model S, the passenger airbag disables when she uses the seat cushion. I know there is something in the manual that eludes that baggy clothing and other things can cause the airbag to be disabled. Does anyone know why this happens? I am trying to understand if there is a workaround or something. Obviously her weight is still the same, but there is some sort of sensor somewhere that isn’t triggered properly and I am trying to understand if anyone else has figured out how to make this work? Or perhaps there is a better type of seat cushion she should be using.
