Anyone have an OBC replaced outside warranty

Looks like the OBC in our 2017 Model X has gone kaput. So no AC charging. DC is fine.

Tesla quoting 3.74 hours labour for general diagnosis (0.5 hour) and remove & replace (3.24 hours) at £165+VAT plus the cost of the OBC @ £1,960. They chucked in a 'free' 20 minutes labour for remote diagnosis as goodwill. So looking at the thick end of £2,700.

Spoke to Cleevely who were honest and said they cant get parts from Tesla at any sort of trade discount - so any savings would be in the labour.

Before I go trawling on Fleabay (seriously) does anyone know of any reputable EV or BEV electronics repair places, other than Cleevely that could look at these units or is it a bin job?

Still waiting on Cleevely to come back with price etc.

I messaged EV Clinic in Croatia, and basically said;

"How does your service work?

If I were to purchase this - do you send me a refurbished unit straight away and I send you mine in return - or do you need to receive mine first before you send it back (or send me another refurb'd unit)?
"

The response (from their CEO no less):

"We avoid sending swap OBC because it need reprogramming. It is not plug&play.

UK is not in EU and there is import tax fee too."

Not sure why I'd need to pay import tax on a product I already own and accordingly am sending it to them for repairs.

So I think EV Clinic is a thanks but no thanks from me.

You do but you don’t. I’ve not needed to use but thought I once would have. Iirc you declare its outgoing which is later tied up with its return and nothing is paid. I’m sure the specifics can be easily found.

Thanks yes, I think I could probably find the correct route through our wonderful bonfire of red tape.

I've asked them how long repairs like this typically take.

It looks like any sort of swap with a part from a breaker or salvage specialist would require at leas t some level of coding or programming - something really only Tesla could do and we know what their attitude would be. A great big fat no. So I think that 'option' is pretty much off the table.

Sorted now hopefully. Am assured though AC charging works as intended. Wallet suitably lightened to the tune of £2,799.52. No hope of any goodwill from Tesla unfortunately.

Old OBC in the boot. Maybe I’ll stick it on Fleabay. It’s bloody heavy!
