The purpose is to hold up the perimeter of the front ‘tub’ so that the service panel fasteners can press down into it. I have a persistent rattle from the fasteners because they won’t all engage properly. I don’t think the original part works properly - improvements have been made by another owner before (extra 0.2” depth?) and in any case it needs to be made more solid, such as by including a 3D-printed reinforcement, which is what I shall probably do.
