I've essentially used a moving window of 30 minutes from the last active event. E.g. if driving or something else which is considered active then poll more aggressively. After 30 minutes I switch to polling every 20 minutes.
This is all used to build "workflows" which you can setup. You create triggers and they fire actions. I finally got one of the most exciting workflows running tonight - auto windows close! Excited to say it is working and the car goes back to sleep nicely. Here's a screenshot of the app so far - copy needs some work...
