Autopilot is trying to kill you

Hi. It’s true. But...that’s ok. The problem, Autopilot will not interpret an offset vehicle as an obstacle. For example, a police car kinda blocks a lane to conduct a traffic stop or a mail truck putting mail in a box. Kinda in the lane, kinda not. As far as autopilot is concerned this lane is empty. Why? Only Tesla knows. It’s a bug. Call Tesla and the answer is, autopilot is in beta. You still have to drive it at least pay some measurable level of attention. Some of us do not pay attention and we hit stuff. What’s worse is that an autopilot wreck will be a headline on news and add to FUD. Short sellers rejoice. I think there are a few take aways here. As a pilot, we are trained to assume that the autopilot is trying to kill you. It is only the skills of the pilot that save the day. Now, a trained pilot has significantly higher level of training than a motorist. The only real training for a Tesla driver needs to have, “hey. Autopilot is really cool but you need to know it will not save you from monitoring the drive.” Maybe the term “autopilot” should be replaced. Poor choice of words really. The connotation of the term “autopilot“ should likely be replaced but ego won’t let happen. Tesla is still an amazing vehicle, a safe vehicle, a cool car. The Car isn’t the problem, the Customer is.

AP is mainly for highway usage where there are few mail trucks. Use at your own risk else but blame yourself for the use cases you are asking it to do.
100s of FSD beta videos show it going around delivery trucks and the like.

Could not agree more. It’s a great system for highway driving. Anytime I’m the least bit distracted I engage and it’s 100% better than the alternative. The OP protest too much, autopilot it’s just a name, like an infinity pool ... it has its limits.
