Brand new Tesla M3 owner here and I’ve been testing AP. Today it veered left in an intersection and tried to move to the left lane. Luckily I steered back before hitting the car next to me. Is this something to report to Tesla so they can look at why it did it? Or is this just how it goes sometimes when AP is learning?

Also, is it advisable just to use AP on highways at this point and not around town?

Thanks.

I have some specific knowledge about this. I don't use AP in town with present firmware below version 9. I only use it on freeways and even then, a similar problem can occur.

This is a problem that can occur and usually happens at intersections where the lane you are in does not go straight ahead on the other side of the intersection... such as when the lanes shift or curve. AND when there are no lines through the intersection which is usually the case.

Wait for future firmware updates that correct for this situation.

Got it, thanks. Appreciate the help.

I am confused ... isn't the definition of a freeway a road that does not have intersections?

Or are you referring to the exits from the freeway? If that is what you are referring to, I think it is a known problem in the current version of EAP. If you are in the right lane as a right-hand exit approaches, the car sees the lane "widen" and tries to drive in the middle (half way between the freeway lane and the exit lane). I expect this is a problem that will be fixed shortly.

Well, I didn't do a good job of explaining what I mean by it sometimes happening on the interstate. So I see why you are confused. I am thinking of a situation where a lane divides into two lanes such as the opening of a car pool lane or as in your example that a right exit comes up and it might be at a section of the road where it curves. And yes, it is a known issue. Glad you brought it up.

PLEASE read the Model 3 owners manual section on using Auto Pilot. You own a car that is very different from anything you have ever driven in your entire life but apparently you have not read the manual. Read the manual. Here is a relevant page, which states:

“Autosteer is intended for use only on highways and limited-access roads... Do not use Autosteer on city streets...”.

That means no cross traffic.

Thanks appreciate the info.

FWIW if you have something that doesn’t get handled correctly, you can send an audio bug report to Tesla. Send it as close to the “incident” as possible for them to track it easier. We’ve occasionally even reported incorrect speed sign using this feature. Down in Santa Ynez near the Cumash Casino area the posted speed was I think 10mph lower than what the car indicated and hated to see someone get a speeding ticket there. Other times we’ve had the screen crash for no reason.

How do you send an audio bug report?

From the manual:

"Contacting Tesla

For detailed information about your Model 3, go to www.tesla.com, and log on to your Tesla Account, or sign up to get an account.

If you have any questions or concerns about your Model 3, call 1-877-79TESLA (1-877‐798-3752).

Note: You can also use voice commands to provide feedback to Tesla. Say "Note", "Report", "Bug note", or "Bug report" followed by your brief comments. Model 3 takes a snapshot of its systems, including your current location, vehicle diagnostic data, and screen captures of the touchscreen. Tesla periodically reviews these notes and uses them to continue improving Model 3."

Don't recall how many seconds you have to say what you are reporting but it is kind of brief so think ahead what you want to convey and do so concisely. I haven't had to submit anything yet on my Model 3, so someone who has can chime in here who has, but on the MS it indicates what you said in text on the screen and then will Thank You for submitting it so you know it went through. An example of what I might report based my previous post would be "Bug Report. Posted Speed is 25 here not 35."

I had that on Freeway, and apparently happens when you are merging lines and are disappearing.. still a sudden veer it's scary... and thank god my hand were on the wheels too.. will be a while for AP to gain my trust again, skynet will always be there haha

Hello. So autopilot was $5k and future fully autonomous driving was $3k? I'm not complaining or anything but there are so many different road situations that this will be a challenge to deliver, no?

Ken

yep, but I was sold once I saw that the car can identify and trace 2 cars in front of you. I believe systems is there, just need some badass coder to figure out, or more data which we are all sharing to Tesla build up this Data... :)

Ah, there's plenty of little things that force us to takeover control, most valid but some not, and I guess it helps Tesla debug.
