I'm sure we've all read the story below by now. Opportunities like this don't come around every day. For only $16k and a heartfelt apology for the misunderstanding the narrative here could be turned on it's head.

It was actually for 4,000 pies:

Owner Voahangy Rasetarinera, who started the business out of her home in 2017, says both sides agreed on a quote and exchanged an invoice for 4,000 pies for delivery this week.

What kind of event was originaly scheduled?

This article said it was for a black history event:

a catering job for thousands of mini-pies for a Black History Month event.

it just seems that there is a very limited window to turn all of this very negative publicity into a win-win for everyone by making the goodwill gesture of apologizing for the mistake and hand delivering a check for the full $16k. And then placing another pre-paid order for an event at a later date.
