Carbon fiber trim is so dated looking though...

I would say the same about the wood trim in this application, but it's all personal preference.

If you're serious about getting an X go find an inventory vehicle now with cabon fiber. I took an inventory X because I didn't want to chance a rushed end of the quarter vehicle when I ordered in last day of free supercharging. I got carbon fiber essentially for free because it was offset by cheaper midnight silver paint from older inventory vehicle pricing. Every time I look at the dash the carbon fiber on white just looks wow.

Is the CF trim faux? I thought I read somewhere that it was real - although I don't see how that's possible given the very low price point.

It's a real layer of CF on a plastic substrate. All of S and X trim panels are real whatever over a plastic backer except for the OG piano black. That trim contains no pianos at all.
