Just posted this in the Model S factory thread but figured it might be worthwhile to start another since the news might be unrelated to Model S.

Well I guess we'll get all the details at 5pm. But I'm hearing that Tesla will be buying NUMMI from Toyota.

"...after opening its coffers to the struggling EV manufacturer back in May of 2009...."

What's up with the "struggling" bit?

Yup, this sounds interesting. Looking forward to the announcement! NUMMI is right in my backyard but, is definitely overkill for the Model S. (Unless the 2014+ Roadster is also in the picture as well as a Model S Lite!)

NUMMI? Why.... when they get Downey for nothing, practically? There doesn't seem a good technology advantage for either...this seems an odd couple.

Yeah, it's strange to me too. Tesla must be getting a great deal.

If Toyota's going to be in on Tesla's manufacturing side...as far as I'm concerned there's nobody better to be partnering with.

Gotta say, we've sort of been here before.

Interesting if they do get into bed with Toyota for the manufacturing. I guess that means ripping up the current Model S platform design. However, we Mercedes getting into bed with Renault-Nissan, and bringing onboard their own battery JV for other EVs, I think this could work out better for Tesla in the long run.

oh no... That will make 3 cars from Tesla, all with different design cues? Roadster from Lotus, Model S in house, bluestar Toyota?

Say it ain't so... that's not how you build a brand

    *edit*

This hints that bluestar and whatever the joint vehicle is will be two separate entities.
